March Madness is one of America's most beloved sporting events. Every year, millions upon millions fill out their brackets in hopes of winning some cash.

In March, the NCAA's single-elimination tournament begins and features 68 men's teams and 64 women's teams from across America, Canada, and Mexico.

First Four

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's basketball tournament, affectionately known as "March Madness", has come to symbolize the frenzy of end-of-season sports enthusiasm across America. Each March, 68 teams qualify for the tournament by either winning their conference or qualifying through an at-large selection process.

On March 14th and 15th for men and 15th and 16th for women, the 68 teams are assigned seeds based on their performance during the regular season. In The First Four which begins March 14th & 15th this year - featuring four lowest-ranked teams per bracket - four will play against each other to eliminate four from the field.

Teams that win their initial round game advance to the Second Round. These teams are then placed into regional semifinals, also known as "Sweet 16." Once each round has concluded, 64 teams remain to compete for the championship title.

In the opening round, there were several major upsets. #13 Furman upset #4 Virginia 67-68; Princeton beat #2 Arizona 59-55; and Fairleigh Dickinson upset No. 1 Purdue by 63-58 - an unbelievable result!

Millions of fans will tune in to watch their favorite teams make or break their brackets throughout the entire tournament. That is why there is such excitement surrounding the NCAA's single-elimination, single-game championship tournaments, which take place over three weekends.

The 68 teams that make it to the NCAA tournament are assigned seeds based on their regular-season performance. After being paired in one of four regions, these teams determine where they'll play their first and second round games. The winners of each region then compete in a regional semifinal - an internal tournament within itself - where they face off to win their respective regional and advance to the Final Four.

Second Round

On Saturday, the Second Round of the NCAA begins with eight games throughout the day as teams vie to claim their Sweet 16 tickets. Furman, a 13-seed, kicks things off against San Diego State while Princeton faces Missouri in a rematch of last week's win over Arizona.

Some of the biggest upsets of the first round included 13-seed Furman shocking 4-seed Virginia and 15-seed Princeton shocking brackets across America after trailing for much of their game against Arizona. Elite Eight

On average, 75% of top-seeded teams make it to the Elite Eight each year; by comparison, only a handful of lower-seeded teams have ever advanced that far.

Every March, the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament takes place - it's the premier single-elimination basketball event worldwide. To determine who makes up each bracket for this year's event, 68 teams are chosen through an intense selection process known as "Selection Sunday."

To determine the four lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and at-large bids, a process known as automatic qualifying selects the four lowest seeded individuals. This field of 64 is then split into two rounds called the First Four and Second Four.
