  Latinos, the nation's largest minority group, still lag behind when it comes to media jobs. A new report revealed that while their numbers rose across other fields, such as education and social work, but didn't see as significant an uptick in media industry jobs. Lack of representation is an increasingly serious problem. Not only does it keep people of Hispanic and Latinx heritage from seeing themselves reflected in media, but it also fosters an environment in which they feel like their success may never materialize. 1. Reach out to the community Reaching out to the community is an effective way of increasing Mexican and Latinx representation. By becoming involved with your local community, you'll gain a deep understanding of its needs and culture - making it easier for you to form connections with people who may otherwise never have encountered you directly. Engaging with the community comes in many forms, from attending events to volunteering at food banks or shelters. One easy way is donating new or gently used items from family, friends or neighbors and handing them out directly. Though these films will likely appeal to a broad audience, it's essential to keep in mind that representation of Hispanic and Latinx individuals remains problematic in Hollywood. According to Business Insider's research report on this matter, although more diverse and inclusive stories exist on screen there remain stereotypical and harmful depictions of Hispanics on both TV and cinema screens. 4. Learn a new language Are you a language enthusiast? Consider learning a foreign tongue to enrich both your professional and personal life. While learning a new tongue may present its own set of unique challenges, learning foreign languages also opens doors to meet people from across the globe and expand your horizons. Before beginning a second language learning experience, make sure that you first consider why you wish to do it and why now is the right time for you. Get a job Job hunting is one of the key ways to increase Mexican and Latinx representation, providing workers with a chance at building good salaries and stable careers - two factors that contribute to economic security. Unfortunately, however, many workers encounter barriers to accessing these opportunities due to occupational segregation preventing advancement and income improvement. Latinos face occupational segregation as well as lack of training and education, leading to lower job attainment rates than Black, White, and Asian American workers - particularly women, who experience lower employment rates than their male counterparts. However, many media companies continue to fail in recruiting and retaining talented Latinos - both film and TV networks and publishers alike, according to a new report from Latino Data Coalition (LDC). These organizations employ relatively few people of color in positions that require them to write, direct or act as lead actors on their shows; only 1.5% of TV showrunners and 1.3% of directors are Latino. Organizations must take the initiative to improve their hiring practices to attract more candidates from the Hispanic community, mentor their employees and support them as they strive to meet their goals. As part of their recruitment and retention efforts, employers should offer benefits tailored specifically for Hispanic populations, such as paid time off, health insurance and discounted childcare fees. General Motors was honored by LATINA Style as the best company for Latinas due to their efforts supporting this community through recruitment and retention efforts. Investment in talent from the Hispanic community makes good business sense, signaling to your employees that your organization cares about customers and communities alike. This is particularly relevant in industries like auto manufacturing where many plants such as General Motors (GM) are located across Latin America - specifically Mexico and Costa Rica.
