How America's Math Coach is Preparing Students for the Future of AI

Steven Tom, Walden University's Chief Customer Officer, attended a conference where he witnessed an AI tutor he believed to be "just okay." It followed a scripted route which ultimately led them to find their answers. Math coaching can be costly, often costing over twelve times as much as short-term professional development workshops (Knight, 2012). But can technology replace these costly services? AskJill AskJill is an innovative AI tool helping students become more comfortable with technology and learn to use it effectively. This chatbot-like system enables users to pose any question they like to the machine and get answers back from it - providing students with an excellent opportunity to explore different kinds of algorithms and understand how they operate. Students should also become knowledgeable on the ethical concerns associated with AI tools. This can help them become better critical thinkers later on in their careers, as well as understanding how they can evaluate and apply this technology themselves in their lives - one way is through free online resources such as TensorFlow Playground and IBM Watson Studio where students can experiment directly with this technology and get hands-on experience using it in everyday situations. Carnegie Mellon's Ogan collaborated with her colleague to develop an artificially intelligent (AI) teacher to assist children in understanding linear equations. Their intention was to see if students would respond similarly to its mistakes as they might to those made by humans - however she found that AI didn't perform as well due to students not being able to connect with it as effectively. As more educators incorporate AI into classrooms, it is increasingly important for students to gain an understanding of this technology. Doing so will give them an advantage in job searching as well as prepare them for success in an increasingly digital-human hybrid workforce of tomorrow. McKinsey recently reported that AI could replace 30 million workers over the next five years worldwide. To ensure students can take full advantage of advances in this area, education systems must begin preparing them early so that students are equipped to take full advantage of developments in this sector. AI's rapid advancement is astounding and offers great promise in education. It can free up time for teachers and university staff members, as well as give students an individualized learning experience. Although AI may present some hurdles along its journey, its promise makes it worth investing time in its pursuit. Agent Smith Smith is one of the most beloved characters from The Matrix trilogy. Hugo Weaving's performance as Smith suggests the complex personality AI may one day possess; even though technically an artificial intelligence program, Smith seems able to show some feelings, like when confronting The Oracle. Smith initially appears professional and polite as an Agent of the system; however, this facade conceals his true nature - an angry monster who wishes Neo dead. After Trinity confesses her affections for Neo, Smith becomes furious with him for abandoning Trinity for Neo. Outraged at her confession of love for him by Trinity, Smith becomes even more powerful as his rage leads to attempts on Neo's life by killing Trinity himself; ultimately turning him into a power-hungry monster bent on destroying both humans and the Matrix which caused his existence while also striving towards its destruction - believing them both responsible for his pain. After being revived as a virus by the Architect, Smith becomes even more powerful and destructive than before. He can infiltrate other programs and humans within the Matrix to transform them into copies of himself; and can absorb other programs' abilities he has taken over, such as Oracle's ability to predict future choices or Sati's weather control abilities. Even while harboring deep animosity for humans, Smith can still show kindness. He can appeal to Neo's better nature by offering to "wipe clean his slate", without incurring charges and reintegration into the Matrix, in exchange for information on where Morpheus may be found. Neo turns down this offer; nevertheless he manages to evade Smith's attempts at killing him with Desert Eagle guns. Georgia Tech's Jill Watson development team hopes to expand the use of AI tools like AskJill and Agent Smith by increasing usage at other universities, K-12 schools, workplaces and workplaces across the globe. Goel noted that in addition to developing new tutors, their team is also improving existing ones. AI-ALOE AI is an ever-evolving field with numerous applications. To prepare students for its integration into their careers, early exposure is vital. Many of the necessary skills for working with AI can be taught. Students looking for careers involving this technology should major in data science, computer engineering or advanced statistics; even those not planning on working directly with it should learn its inner workings; AI technology will undoubtedly come up in everyday conversations! Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing education by revolutionizing how we teach. AI tutors enable students to maximize their studies while faculty can focus on imparting knowledge in areas that they excel. Such advances allow more people to access higher education at scale while making it more affordable and achievable for all. At the same time, millions of American workers will need to reskill and upskill over the coming decade as automation changes the workplace. Most won't be traditional college students; most have families, jobs and other obligations so will need to study after work hours and on weekends when professors, teaching assistants or human tutors may not be available. Tom began developing Julian at Walden University, an online institution recently acquired by Adtalem. While it remains too early to predict exactly how well Julian will fare for student outcomes, Tom believes it has improved the learning experience for students. Unlike some other AI tutors, Julian doesn't simply answer objective or correct/incorrect questions but rather digests course materials and analyses student work before redirecting back to resources with answers and relevant resources for further assistance. It was designed as more adaptive tutor than traditional AIs so it can better adapt itself to every student individually's individual needs and requirements. Researchers of this project seek to develop novel AI theories and techniques that will transform online learning for adults, collaborating with Georgia Tech, Technical College System of Georgia colleges and corporate partners such as IBM, Boeing and Wiley to achieve this aim. Additionally, National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $20 million towards this effort that also involves research at Arizona State University and Drexel University. The Future Students looking to work alongside AI in the future must first gain an understanding of its workings; including its learning mechanisms, data processing capabilities and why certain decisions are made. Students also need to know what capabilities this technology possesses as well as what limitations may exist in its capabilities. One way of preparing students for working alongside AI is integrating it into classrooms and showing its potential benefits. Marilyn Stehlik and her Do the Math coauthors use an artificial intelligence platform called Julian to assist their students with challenging math problems, recognizing student answers and leading them towards appropriate resources, then feeding back this feedback into its system so it can get smarter over time. AI offers immense promise to enhance education. Not only does it enable personalized learning, but it can also relieve teachers and administrators of tedious administrative tasks that occupy their time: from grading multiple-choice tests and handwritten answers assessment to machine graders performing them for teachers - freeing up more time for lesson plan development and engaging students. AI may still be relatively novel, yet companies have already begun employing it across a range of industries and educational settings. Some offer AI curriculum for high school students while others create software to aid teachers and administrators with their teaching practices. Artificial Intelligence systems in online learning environments can communicate with instructors by employing virtual avatars that capture student expressions and body language to facilitate social engagement; however, such systems often raise privacy issues and may seem intrusive for at-home learners. Students participating in our survey had mixed opinions regarding these technologies. Most (9 out of 12) disliked the thought of an artificial intelligence (AI) system analyzing their unconscious behavior such as eye movements or facial expressions during class; many expressed worry that AI may miss subtle expressions of human emotion and flatten and simplify it, potentially leading to miscommunication and confusion; furthermore they believed instructors may become less responsive if they knew that emotions were being tracked by AI systems.
