Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Gives Concerning Injury Update on Draymond Green
The Golden State Warriors are closely monitoring Draymond Green's health. The four-time All-Star has missed the past four games due to a sore knee, but coach Steve Kerr says he's "doing much better" and making progress.
The Warriors have an impressive 28-6 record when Green is in the lineup, but they're just 2-4 when he doesn't suit up. Without Green, their all-time help defender, they could potentially suffer a significant setback on that end of things.
Draymond Green, a three-time NBA All-Star and integral part of the Golden State Warriors' success over the past two seasons, has missed multiple games this season due to injury. The Warriors have taken an approach in his recovery that keeps him listed as questionable for Friday's game against Houston Rockets.
Kerr boasts 30 years of NBA experience as a player, coach, television analyst and front office executive. For three years (2007-10), he served as President of Basketball Operations and General Manager for the Phoenix Suns; leading them to an impressive 155-91 winning percentage and two playoff appearances.
In 1999, Kerr joined the San Antonio Spurs and helped them win their first NBA title. He also spent time with the Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic and Portland Trail Blazers before representing USA Basketball at FIBA World Cup 1986 in Madrid, Spain for gold medal success.
He began his collegiate career at the University of Arizona and quickly established himself as a standout point guard for the Wildcats. During his senior year, he helped lead their team to its first Final Four in 1988. Additionally, he earned a degree in general studies with an emphasis on history, sociology and English from that institution.
After college, Kerr spent time with the Suns before being traded to Cleveland in 1989. Over his 15-year NBA career, he played for six different teams (Phoenix, Cleveland, Orlando, Chicago, San Antonio and Portland), including being part of three championship teams - Chicago's and San Antonio's - throughout that stretch.
On December 13, 2014, Kerr was hired as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors and quickly transformed their roster into one of the league's best units. Under his guidance, they have since gone on to achieve great success throughout their time together as one of the league's premier sides.
Coach Kerr has already won an NBA championship as a coach. In 2015, his leadership of the Warriors to an impressive 19-2 start earned him recognition as NBA Coach of the Year.
With Green out, Kerr must rely on his other players to lead the Warriors back to the top of the Western Conference. Donte DiVincenzo, Jonathan Kuminga and Kevon Looney all started Thursday against Los Angeles in place of Green. Together they combined for 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists in a loss.
On Sunday after their crushing defeat to Detroit, Coach Steve Kerr provided an alarming injury update on Draymond Green. The Golden State Warriors star has been dealing with various ailments throughout this season and they appear to be getting worse as the team heads into its final 30 regular-season games.
Fans of all sports should be concerned by the injuries, but those who watched the Warriors last season should especially worry. A muscle strain in Green's right foot kept him out for four games and right ankle soreness has kept him off the court throughout much of February.
On Wednesday, Kerr reported that the Golden State Warriors star is feeling better and may return soon. He says his injured toe is not currently causing any pain, and it's "day-to-day."
However, he needs to get back into the grind before the Warriors make the playoffs. He hopes to return in time for some crucial games this season and provide his teammates with some much-needed assistance.
On a related note, Kerr reported that Shaun Livingston, Andre Iguodala and Klay Thompson are all nursing minor injuries at present. But he added they are feeling much better and should be ready to play when the Warriors return home for their second half of road trip on Friday.
One reason for this is that all players are focused on the game at hand and not getting distracted by their injuries. As a result, they've returned to basics and played well in the process.
In his interview with 95.7 The Game's "Damon & Ratto," Kerr also mentioned that forward Jonathan Kuminga (right foot sprain) and JaMychal Green (right lower leg infection) have scrimmaged this week to get back in the groove. They are expected to join the rest of their teammates for practice on Thursday.
On Tuesday night, as the Warriors prepare to face off against the Sacramento Kings, coach Steve Kerr provided an update on Golden State's star forward Draymond Green's health. Green was declared out of Thursday night's game against Denver due to a right knee contusion.
Although Green had been listed as questionable by the team medical staff, Kerr stated during his postgame availability that he expected Green to play in Friday's game against Houston Rockets. Unfortunately, just before tipoff, the Warriors decided not to include Green in their starting lineup.
The Warriors have suffered a major setback with the loss of their top one-on-one matchup against Nuggets forward Nikola Jokic and all-time help defender Draymond Green.
This season, the Warriors have not lost a game with Green playing and are averaging more points per game with him on the floor than they do without him. Hopefully this injury isn't long-term and Green can return to his usual level of play in the near future.
But if Green is sidelined for any significant amount of time, this will be a major setback for the Warriors. They are 32-12 this season and haven't won a championship since 2015; so losing Green is something the team cannot afford to overlook.
While Green will be missed for a while, there are other key pieces the Warriors can use to pick up where they left off. Kevon Looney, back in the starting lineup as an experienced forward who can play both ends of a back-to-back, is one such player.
With Looney back in the lineup, it's likely that Warriors' frontcourt depth will be further improved with Jonathan Kuminga coming off the bench and Donte DiVincenzo potentially seeing more time at center.
In addition to the aforementioned pieces, the Warriors also possess an array of young players who can step up when needed. Jordan Poole, Klay Thompson and Donte DiVincenzo are all in their second seasons with the team; together they have made some outstanding contributions this season.
On Friday evening, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr provided an update on Draymond Green's injury status. Following their loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kerr stated that Green is unlikely to play in Friday's game against Houston Rockets due to a torn ligament in his left index finger.
The Golden State Warriors have a tough schedule ahead, featuring games against Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte Hornets. Draymond Green must perform well if they want to keep making it into the playoffs. How well he practices will determine his availability; however, they remain confident that he'll be ready to go once again.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area, Kerr has yet to see Green in practice but remains optimistic that the Warriors can get him back before Sunday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Although no timetable has been set for Green's return, Kerr hopes he will be available before playoffs begin.
Green is an integral part of their defensive rotation, so any extended absence could have a major effect on the team. Already this season, the Warriors have experienced two injuries to their starting frontcourt players; thus, losing three-time All-Star Green poses a major concern.
On February 2nd, Green was forced to miss a game against the Denver Nuggets due to right foot soreness. Kerr expressed his regret at having to rest his player so it would not impact their health negatively. Kerr also mentioned how much he would love for the NBA to reduce its regular season to 70 games; however, this change seems unlikely at present.
Golden State's defensive rotation revolves around Green and Steph Curry, who can be a weak link on both ends of the floor. That is why Kerr is worried about what this injury could mean for his team.
Thankfully, Green is in good spirits and the Warriors have faith that he can recover quickly from this injury and return to play on the court. With Thompson and Curry added to their lineup, this season for the Warriors is on a collision course; nothing will stop them from getting this season right.
