Disneys New AntMan Movie Brings in Over 100 Million on Opening Weekend

Disney's Ant-Man movie has eclipsed $100 million on opening weekend, becoming the first Marvel franchise movie to reach that milestone in 2023.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from audiences and critics alike, this latest film marks a successful beginning to Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, it introduces Kang the Conqueror as the MCU's newest villain.

Opening Weekend

Disney's newest Marvel blockbuster, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has hit theaters across North America and is on track to surpass $100 million during its opening weekend. This film easily beat out both prior 'Ant-Man' movies to open at the box office, becoming the largest release to date in 2023.

Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly star as Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne in the lead roles, respectively. Although the third chapter of this franchise's pint-sized trilogy has received mixed reviews, it is expected to end its run with the biggest opening weekend yet in its series history.

Industry sources indicate the film earned $17.5 million during Thursday previews before earning an estimated $46 million Friday gross. This figure is significantly above previous 'Ant-Man' films' opening days, yet still short of the $90.7 million and $69.6 million opening days achieved by 'Doctor Strange into the Multiverse of Madness' and 'Thor: Love and Thunder' respectively.

On a global scale, the film has earned $121 million in its first three days outside China, bringing its total overseas to an impressive $225.3 million. This makes it currently the third highest international release this year behind Yimou Zhang's 'Full River Red' and 'The Wandering Earth II'.

Overall, the film's performance in North America is expected to remain strong over its weekend and is an encouraging sign for Marvel Cinema Universe's future. Furthermore, Disney can look forward to having their largest year ever of movie openings with this success.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the new film is projected to earn a 53 percent score from 145 reviews - making it the lowest-rated MCU theatrical release since Chloe Zhao's 'Eternals' back in November 2021. Additionally, this entry has received less positive reviews than its Phase 5 predecessors such as 'The Eternals' and 'Infinity War' did. With such a lackluster response from moviegoers, competition at the box office may be even greater compared to recent releases.

Domestic Box Office

Disney's new superhero action adventure 'Ant-Man' made over $100 million during its opening weekend, surpassing expectations and setting a new standard for Marvel Studios films. Starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, the superhero action adventure was released in 4,345 North American theaters according to BoxofficePro estimates.

The film also dominates the global box office, earning an estimated $225 million worldwide. This marks Marvel's first crossover over $200 million since Avengers: Infinity War and marks Disney's biggest opening of 2023.

Though the numbers were remarkable, they weren't a shocker since the film had been expected to exceed expectations. It's important to note, however, that ticket sales on opening weekend do not include theaters' share of revenue from showings. That is why selecting your theater carefully is so crucial.

One of the best options to watch Ant-Man and the Wasp is on an IMAX screen, where you can enjoy immersive 3D technology. These screens are available in most major markets, as well as at many smaller theaters too.

Another option is a standard screen, which will let you watch the movie using regular projection. While this still provides an enjoyable experience, it won't quite match up to an IMAX screen's immersive qualities.

This is especially true if you live in a large city, as there tend to be more standard screens than IMAX ones. If there are no IMAX theaters nearby, consider seeing the movie at one of Dolby Cinemas instead; these theaters boast Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, widely considered the highest quality digital technologies for moviegoers' experiences.

Ant-Man, the latest movie in Marvel Universe, continues to gain steam - and you still have time to see it! Currently showing in over 4,345 theaters across North America, you have plenty of chances to catch this epic tale before it heads over to Disney+ later this year. So whether you're an Ant-Man fan or not, we hope you can make it out this weekend!

International Box Office

Marvel Cinematic Universe's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has set a record with an opening weekend of over $100 million, surpassing both previous "Ant-Man" movies which opened to $57.2 million and $75.8 million respectively in 2015 and 2018.

The international box office has been a huge success for the movie, earning over $225 million worldwide to date and pushing its total to over $250 million. It currently ranks third behind Yimou Zhang's Full River Red and Frant Gwo's The Wandering Earth II, both of which had strong openings in China.

Disney's newest addition to Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an exhilarating adventure that pits Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) against Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), a jaded galactic emperor living in exile in the subatomic "quantum realm," where he can unleash blasts of blue energy upon his enemies.

This third Ant-Man film takes on a darker tone, featuring computer-generated cities and cavelike views. Additionally, Evangeline Lilly stars as Hope van Dyne - a scientist with special abilities.

Overall, audiences and critics have had a generally favorable reaction to the film. While it may not have lived up to expectations, it still managed an impressive start for the franchise.

With Presidents Day weekend and most kids out of school this coming week, the movie should experience a softer drop than expected. This should make it easier for it to reach $95 million in its opening weekend as predicted below.

The latest addition to the MCU is sure to be one of its biggest hits in years and will have an immense effect on future installments. While the first two movies didn't do as well as expected, they didn't feature our titular heroes facing off against a brand-new threat.

Disney's New 'Ant-Man' Movie Scores Over $100 Million on Opening Weekend

Over the weekend, Marvel's Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) released their newest movie together, Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). With over $100 million in ticket sales on its opening weekend, this marks the first entry in Phase 5 of Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Critics have mostly given the film negative reviews; yet fans remain dedicated to their beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe films. According to Rotten Tomatoes, it has an below average rating of 53% Certified Fresh.

Critics have mixed opinions on this movie; some praising its story and performances while others have even compared it to previous great movies from the franchise.

Paul Rudd returns as Scott Lang, a former petty criminal who transforms into the super hero Ant-Man to save the world from evil villain Kang. He joins forces with Hope Van Dyne (aka The Wasp), another superhero in her own right.

Ant-Man, as a superhero, wears a suit that allows him to shrink and expand in size while increasing his strength. It serves as an effective weapon in fighting off the bad guys in the film.

But wearing Ant-Man's suit can also be a liability, particularly when he doesn't have it on. Unfortunately, many characters in the movie use his suit without having any sense of humor or personality.

Unfortunately, this makes the movie tedious to get through and I found myself skipping sections. While not the worst thing I've seen from an MCU film, it doesn't inspire me to want to watch another one.

Parents should be aware of a few issues before their kids watch the movie. Although it has a PG-13 rating, the MPAA does not deem it "safe for kids" and suggests watching with older children.

Though entertaining, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania isn't one of Marvel Studios' best entries. Here are seven major things parents should be aware of before their kids watch it: what age rating it has; what it looks like onscreen; and if there are any warnings that should be issued prior to watching.
