Discover the Inspiring Story of WeTV's 'Breaking The Ice' and Its All-Black

Breaking the ice is a way of helping new situations or meetings feel less intimidating and daunting, such as at parties, business conferences and school events. Figure skating champion Rory Flack will coach a fully diverse competitive synchronized ice skating team in WE tv's docuseries Breaking the Ice, premiering this Thursday. Watch it online through Philo (free trial available) or Fubotv to catch all of this drama unfold. Rory Flack Rory Flack is a skate champion who's making waves in her Washington, DC-based skating team as they train for national synchronized skating championships in Breaking the Ice on WeTV. However, their journey won't be an easy one: as part of becoming the nation's first diverse competitive synchronized skating team ever assembled by her, their journey must overcome prejudice within their sport as well as pressure from parents and rigorous training to reach success. Flack made history during her own skating career by being one of the first women ever to perform a backflip on ice, then again as the first African American woman ever to win the US Open professional figure skating championships in 1994. Now she is helping young skaters pursue their own careers - leading Team DMV, an organization made up of 10 middle and high school girls that train daily to become synchronized skaters but face injuries, costs associated with training and competitions, prejudice when purchasing equipment for themselves or fellow teammates. Robyn Flack, who hails from legendary singer Roberta Flack's family tree, began her professional skating career in 1991 by performing in Ice Capades and the Nutcracker on Ice shows. Subsequently she began coaching in Kentucky and Ohio before eventually being hired as Brian Wright's Indiana World Skating Academy coach; additionally she opened an Alaska figure skating academy called Artistry of Movement Ice Skating Academy while continuing competing professionally both locally and abroad. Inspired by her idol Mabel Fairbanks, Flack established The Color of Ice Production Inc in 2001. By early 2002 she had created, produced and choreographed Ebony on Ice at Chicago Legacy Theater featuring all black skaters that ran for 10 weeks - she also appeared and performed solo alongside artists Howard Hewitt, Kenny Gambel and Savion Glover. Flack's goal in Breaking the Ice is to help Team DMV reach its full potential by training them based on her experiences as a professional skater. She imparts wisdom about how lessons learned on the ice will have lasting ramifications in everyday life. The Skaters Breaking the Ice is an innovative docuseries centered around figure skating champion Rory Flack as she guides a group of diverse middle and high school girls towards becoming their best selves. Premiering exclusively on WE tv and its sister streaming platform ALLBLK this summer, Breaking the Ice is sure to become one of your go-to shows this fall! Flack has made it her mission to inspire young skaters like she was as a child. After fighting hard to reach success in skating herself, she now trains 10 members of Team DMV from different backgrounds, races and socioeconomic statuses - giving viewers a front row seat as they undergo rigorous training programs, navigate family issues and rivalries, and ultimately push themselves beyond limits through this physically and emotionally demanding sport. The show has wide-reaching appeal beyond just skaters - its story is relatable for anyone struggling to achieve goals despite obstacles, while also showing how difficult it can be for young athletes from underprivileged backgrounds to balance academic and athletic lives simultaneously. Assembling a coach who understands your unique challenges can go a long way towards helping you meet your goals and find success. Ice skating is often an expensive pursuit that requires significant investment for time on ice, sessions, music, choreography coaches, travel to competitions costumes etc - these costs make this sport unaffordable for many families, including young skaters themselves. Breaking the Ice's first season will end tonight, so if you want to catch all its episodes before they fade into history, make sure you visit WE tv or use your cable provider's channel finder to locate it: Verizon Fios, AT&T U-verse, Comcast Xfinity Spectrum/Charter Optimum/Altice and DIRECTV are among those with channel finders offering it as well as streaming platforms Philo (offering 60+ channels free trial) or Hulu which both have limited selections but feature extensive libraries of original content as well as extensive archives of original shows that are archived over time - both options provide access to some or all. The Coach Icebreakers are activities designed to help participants adapt quickly to new environments, whether that means shaking hands or playing an exciting game that gets people talking and laughing. Rory Flack is an award-winning figure skater herself who coaches an all-diverse figure skating team on Breaking The Ice. Retiring from competition in 1991 and now dedicating her time coaching young skaters in one of the most challenging sports on earth. Breaking The Ice will premiere Thursday, July 6 at 9 p.m. ET on WE tv and will also be streamed via its sister platform ALLBLK after its initial airing. Produced by Sirens Media with Mioshi Hill, Tim Cohen-Laurie, Wendi Wan and Jon Crowley serving as executive producers.
