Diamondbacks Sign OF Corbin Carroll to EightYear 111 Million Deal

Diamondbacks Sign OF Corbin Carroll to Eight-Year $111 Million Deal Just to Catch A Ball- People are missing something?

Corbin Carroll is one of baseball's premier young outfielders, and his deal with the Diamondbacks offers great value to both parties. For a 22-year-old, it could be life-altering money as well as protection in case injuries or struggles derail his career.

The Diamondbacks have long seen Corbin Carroll as a key component to their future, and this deal shows they're committed to him as such.

1. He’s one of the best young outfielders in the game

Arizona Diamondbacks have secured one of baseball's premier young outfielders by signing OF Corbin Carroll to an eight-year, $111 million deal with a $9 million club option for 2023. According to The Athletic's Keith Law, Carroll was ranked as the best overall prospect this week and his speed and potential have caught the attention of many teams around the league.

He's been an incredible talent since being drafted 16th overall in 2019 and is expected to start the season as the primary left fielder for the Diamondbacks. A great hitter, elite prospect, and possessor of remarkable speed, he could become a huge star at the major league level.

These are all positive developments for the D-backs' future, but what really draws fans to him is his drive and ambition - something Barfield, their director of player development, refers to as his "Mamba Mentality." This attitude has earned him widespread admiration from supporters across sports.

That drive and determination to overcome hardships on the way to success have given Carroll an edge that most clubs strive for but rarely see. He currently has a wRC+ of 166 at Double A, making him the highest-rated prospect in the organization and one of minor league baseball's top prospects.

The Diamondbacks hope he can surpass that number this coming season, and it's easy to envision him being an integral part of their long-term success in 2023. Already this season, he has hit 24 home runs, stolen 31 bags and posted an OPS over 1.000 between Double-A and Triple-A levels.

He also boasts an advanced plate approach, which will enable him to be more efficient against pitchers he'll face in the big leagues. That's a trait many teams prize, especially with all of the advanced stats now available to fantasy players.

He's an ideal option for teams seeking a talented but expensive outfielder without having to shell out as much money as the Braves did with Max Scherzer this winter. If the Diamondbacks can maintain their current production levels, this contract could potentially be worth more than its projected $111 million total value.

2. He’s a Seattle native

Corbin Carroll, a Seattle native and Diamondbacks' first-round draft pick (16th overall) in 2019, made his major league debut last season and has been an integral part of their rise to a competitive spot. At 21 years old, Carroll is still only just beginning his professional career in baseball.

Carroll is a highly touted prospect with an efficient bat path who could easily make the top of the lineup in center field in 2023. As a speedster with superior instincts and skills sets, Carroll can play plus defense at the major-league level.

At Double-A Amarillo this year, the 21-year-old has already hit 13 home runs and stolen 17 bases. Additionally, his slash line of.300/.420/.624 includes eight triples as well as 62 runs scored.

With the D-backs in a strong position to develop their top prospects, it was no shock that they decided to lock Carroll up long term. However, such deals - especially for young players with little major league experience - can often involve risk and uncertainty.

Teams committed to their players' long-term development, however, see an opportunity to secure top talent at an affordable cost and maximize value in the process. That is why many organizations have begun signing such contracts.

In some cases, these deals include substantial incentives to encourage players to stay. This strategy has proven successful for several players over the years, such as Mariners star Julio Rodriguez and Rays prospect Wander Franco.

Team owners should embrace this strategy as it allows them to make long-term investments in their best players without putting them at risk with short-term deals or risky free agent contracts. Furthermore, teams gain cost certainty through arbitration years and extend team control periods.

It's a wise move for both the team and player, demonstrating that the Diamondbacks are serious about keeping one of their most promising young players. Even if negotiations don't progress, it demonstrates they have faith in him as an all-star candidate within a few years.

3. He’s a top prospect

Corbin Carroll is a top prospect and one of the best young outfielders in baseball. He's a speedy left-handed hitter who can hit from both sides of the plate, boasting plenty of power despite his small 5-foot-10 frame.

Carroll is a 2019 first-round draft pick (16th overall) out of Lakeside High School in Seattle and could make the majors as soon as this season. With an excellent chance to be named National League Rookie of the Year and potential All-Star by 2023 if his development continues apace, Carroll could reach those lofty goals quickly.

The Diamondbacks boast an impressive young core, with catcher Gabriel Moreno and shortstop Jordan Lawlar already in the majors. However, Carroll remains their top prospect. This deal keeps him with the club through 2031 with a club option for another season worth $28 million plus potential escalators of up to $20 million more.

For the D-Backs, signing a player who's been ranked among the top prospects in baseball is an excellent value. Without many young players with potential to make an immediate impact on the big league roster, signing one of baseball's top prospects makes perfect sense.

He took some time to get going, however. A labrum tear in his shoulder curtailed his 2020 MiLB season and seven games into '21; however, he has since recovered well and opened '22 in Double A before moving up to Triple A before being called up late in the year.

He's had an impressive year between the minors and majors, batting.307/.425/.610 with 24 home runs and 31 steals - making him an exciting young talent that should have no problem breaking into the majors.

In his first major league spring training, he's demonstrated remarkable speed. Baseball Savant ranks him in the 100th percentile for sprint speed, suggesting he should be ready to put up impressive numbers during his debut full season.

He's an impressive athlete with advanced plate discipline for his age group. While he needs time in the minors to hone his high-end velocity, his speed could make him a star in just a few years. A talented player like this is clearly the future of Arizona's lineup; providing value to the club as long as he stays healthy.

4. He’s a great value

The Diamondbacks are always searching for ways to improve their roster, and recently made one of the best moves of this offseason by signing one of baseball's top young outfielders to an eight-year, $111 million contract. Corbin Carroll will serve as a keystone player on an Arizona squad with plenty of potential.

Arizona selected the 22-year-old outfielder in the first round of the 2019 MLB draft and he quickly rose to become a top prospect in the minors. For the D-backs, he hit.260/.330/.500 with four home runs and 14 RBI in 32 games this season.

He was an exceptional prospect whose tool grades are undeniably impressive, but scouts also adore his game and ability to adapt quickly. These qualities make him a great value for anyone looking to build their roster.

His advanced plate approach and game-altering wheels should be enough for him to produce impressive batting average, OBP, and steals in his debut. He would make an ideal pickup in leagues looking for a top-end power-hitting right fielder.

Scouts were particularly impressed by his attitude in the clubhouse. He wasn't afraid to express himself and was proud of his work - something which impressed them greatly.

What's more, he was always there for his teammates. At Salt River Fields, he spent a lot of time working alongside shortstop Jordan Lawlar and quality control coach Jeff Gardner to help them develop. Being part of an intimate group that got to know one another well was instrumental in their success as players.

His time playing baseball had an immense impact on him, teaching him a great deal about managing pressures of the big league environment and showing him that perfection wasn't possible. This experience also taught him the value of humility and acceptance - two lessons which would remain with him throughout life.

His commitment to the game is something he's always strived to emulate, which makes him such a special asset for the D-backs. If he can bring that same intensity into the majors, they'll have one of their best players in years.
