Darren Star Absent From "Emily in Paris" FYC Event Amid WGA Strike Turmoil

"Emily in Paris," produced by Darren Star, became an instant viral phenomenon after it first premiered on Netflix last August, yet some have expressed criticism of how it romanticizes Paris. Star himself maintains that his show isn't about cliches but instead serves as a love letter to its subject matter - so how will Star keep up the momentum for another season of his hit series? Darren Star Not Attending 'Emily in Paris' FYC Event Amidst WGA Strike Turmoil Darren Star, creator and executive producer of Emily in Paris, had planned on attending Tuesday night's For Your Consideration event hosted by Netflix along with stars Lily Collins and Marylin Fitoussi - however due to the Writers Guild of America strike that began at midnight he chose not to. The guild, which represents writers of television shows and movies, is currently pushing for improved compensation on streaming services such as Netflix. They want to stop what they term the rise of what is called the "gig economy inside a union workforce" through practices like mini-rooms which require writers who pitch a new show to actually set up a writers room with members paid at scale before their show is even greenlit. Though the WGA has made notable strides over time - including by creating a union aimed at young writers - it must still address issues like mini-rooms which lead to reduced pay and less writing from writers than they are entitled to receive. Furthermore, unauthorised mini-rooms have become rampant recently among writers pitching shows on Netflix who then go ahead to write full season scripts without actually gathering a writers room first. Star hopes Emily in Paris' second season, scheduled to start filming in June, will deliver on its promise of "glamorous comedy". According to him, this new run will focus on delving deeper into Emily's character and experiences, including some "unexpected storylines". As well as Emily, Lucien Laviscount joins the cast as a British banker in this show, along with Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park Lucas Bravo Samuel Arnold Bruno Gouery and Camille Razat. Fans of the show love Lily Collins as Emily Cooper; her performance won her the Golden Globe Award for best actress in a comedy series. It is hard not to fall for this charming actress and she is an excellent fit for this series. But the show is also popular for other reasons. Nominated for the 2020 Emmy Awards and receiving critical acclaim from critics alike for its portrayal of French culture while providing relatable characters and funny moments, many fans praise its success as well. Darren Star Explains Why He's Not Attending the 'Emily in Paris' FYC Event As the cast and crew of Emily in Paris Season 2 prepare to celebrate at its final FYC event of 2019, creator Darren Star has informed TheWrap that he won't attend. According to his email reply to their inquiry as to his attendance status, it appears the WGA strike may be standing in his way. Los Angeles will see its strike begin Tuesday morning as negotiations between the Guild and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers remain deadlocked. Guild members voted overwhelmingly in April to authorize a strike, yet talks between both entities have yielded no result yet. Since 2007-08, Hollywood has not seen a major strike of this nature since 2007-08. This one comes at a time when TV and film writers are grappling with keeping up with changes such as DVDs and streaming services. The guild, representing over 11,500 members, says they are striking to address changes in viewing habits for both TV and films. At the core of this dispute lies compensation for shows that aren't traditionally scripted, such as reality TV and online streaming services. Furthermore, the WGA wants to ensure writers receive pay for any "promotional" use of their work on network websites. While the guild has agreed to meet with producers and other key figures, their negotiations with AMPTP have broken down and caused several television and film projects which are in early production to be suspended or shut down altogether. WGA's decision to call a strike has come as an unpleasant shock to writers who will now need to find alternative means of support while negotiations proceed. Some have found work off-duty; unfortunately some are not so fortunate. Popular Emmy award nominees 'Emily in Paris' and 'Westworld' may be forced to go dark during this strike; other worthy projects like Disney Plus' Hamilton or Netflix's Unbelievable will also have to go dark as part of this action plan. Lily Collins and Darren Star recently provided some insight into what viewers can expect in season 2 during an interview. Fans also got a look at how Alfie, Sylvie and Laurent will react after being shocked at a wedding in the finale, as well as Emily's career development and Alfie/Sylvie/Laurent relationships in general. As well, they showed us Camille and Gabriel's new romance and how it affected everyone else in the show. Additionally, there was an epic cliffhanger at the end of season five that left many characters questioning what's ahead for all of them, particularly Emily who was left reeling by it all - though engaged to Gabriel she still needs time to trust him and decide whether marriage is for her or not.
