Charli XCX Totally Missed Harry Styles' Shout-Out to Her at the BRIT Awards

The 'Boom Clap' singer has had plenty of fan meet-and-greet opportunities. Whether fans bring their mothers' cremated ashes to concerts, or want her to pop the question in front of them, she always makes time for them.

Last week, Styles took to Instagram and praised a certain Grammy for how it treats "people like me". His words hit close to home for Charli XCX - here's why she completely missed Harry Styles' shout-out during this weekend's awards show:

1. She's a troll

Harry Styles missed out on a big shout-out from Charli XCX at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards - and that's an important distinction. Even though Charli's Crash album became her first chart topper in both the UK and Australia, she still feels like an artist still searching for their place within the industry.

Charli XCX's career as an experimental pop singer-songwriter was hindered by her major label deal. Forced to release more traditional work as mixtapes, Charli XCX admits feeling trapped at times but hoping this strategy would creatively reinvigorate her.

Charli's breakthrough record, 'Crash,' provided her with the freedom to break away from major label restrictions and deliver an exciting new vision for pop music. It was a risky move but one that paid off: Charli's wryly sarcastic and cleverly dark songs were successful in winning over new fans while keeping those who grew tired of her more mainstream work satisfied.

Charli took her persona to new heights with "Crash," shifting it away from being an "archetypal pop star" to more of a "femme fatale or hypersexualised being." Additionally, she started dressing more sultry than ever before and even featured in an Unboxed shoot that focused solely on her.

In that shoot, she donned everything from '90s florals to skater skirts - and even gave a mini troll doll cameo appearance! But her sexiness wasn't the only thing on show: She also shared some fashion tips with UO and answered questions about her favorite styles as a child.

Charli is an intelligent, sassissy and charming young woman. Her sharp wit and playful attitude come through in her music as well as in interviews where she always seems so friendly and bubbly.

She has a history of trolling people, and recently enjoyed poking fun at celebrity sing-alongs. So it was no surprise when she took issue with Gal Gadot's virtual singalong video for Wonder Woman's 'Imagine' song. Even she made a video for her song which prompted plenty of friendly banter among celebrities themselves - including some lighthearted piss-taking from others!

2. She's a diva

Here's Why Charli XCX Missed Harry Styles' Salute to Her at the BRIT Awards

Though it may be an odd coincidence that Styles was nominated for British Artist of the Year while also making a gesture towards non-binary women, it doesn't make it any less offensive. This is especially so given that his third album -- released on the same day as this announcement--features more subdued vocals compared to his debut Fine Line which featured her powerful pop diva persona.

Though the term diva first entered English opera house slang in the late 19th century, it's often used with an air of disdain. Originally, this label was applied to women who demonstrated great talent and success in their chosen field.

Over time, however, the term evolved into a more generalised and slightly derogatory description for any ambitious woman in show business. Today, many female politicians or entertainers are patronized and criticised for being "divas" instead of just being highly talented and capable professionals in their field.

This trend is especially evident in the music industry, where many high-profile artists are labeled 'divas'. While this criticism can be valid, it ignores that this label simply describes how powerful and assertive women are in their fields - it doesn't imply they're bad people.

In reality, the "diva tag" is one of many derogatory terms often used to describe women in media that are neither flattering nor inspiring. So while it's understandable that Styles would draw attention to this, he could have chosen a better expression instead.

For instance, "diva-like" is another commonly used phrase to describe this type of performance. This implies a certain level of skill and artistry as well as confidence that doesn't require excessive self-deprecation.

Similar to the world of music, a "diva-like" performance can be an impressive way to showcase your skill and dazzle an audience. But it's essential to note that not all diva-like performances are created equal; some may be more effective than others.

3. She's a woman

This year's Mercury Prize short list is packed with debutantes. Pop provocateurs and post-metal girl bands alike are competing for recognition alongside more established acts like Sam Fender, Little Simz and Pulp. Ten of the contenders deserve further consideration, including Gwenno Saunders' Tresor which received critical acclaim from British audiences when seen live.

Charli XCX of London is undoubtedly the queen of pop and she always manages to get her fans wriggling with excitement whenever she performs. Plus, with all that clout behind her, Charli can do no wrong - making her standout from other pop stars even more impressive!

4. She's a fan

On Saturday night, Harry Styles' Best Artist speech at the Brit Awards had fans in tears of joy. He mentioned every member of his One Direction band - Niall, Louis, Liam and Zayn - before dedicating his win to them all.

Harry has not only paid tribute to his former One Direction bandmates at the Grammys earlier this year, but he also dedicated a live show performance of his new song "As It Was" to them as well.

No doubt, Louis was proud of One Direction's success and in awe of their talent. These emotions were evident onstage as he gave an unforgettable performance that left everyone feeling euphoric.

During his set, the British singer also discussed his relationship with his fans and how they have helped him through some difficult times. He stated that he always wanted to create music for them but also acknowledged that he must balance making what he wants with what his fans want to hear.

Charli XCX's fans on Twitter are particularly engaged. She regularly engages with major fan accounts and engages them more intimately than most artists do.

She even featured as the cover story for Rolling Stone UK ahead of the release of her latest album, Crash, and shared a behind-the-scenes video with them. The photo shoot was meant to celebrate both the release of her record and give fans an exclusive glimpse into just how involved the singer is with their fandom.

Last summer, Charli XCX released her critically-acclaimed debut How I'm Feeling Now as a testament to her own struggles with anxiety and mental health. However, it also served as a platform for her fans - many of whom had also dealt with such issues - to come together in support of her.
