Burger King Franchisee to Close 26 Restaurants 2023
Restaurant Brands International-owned Burger King is undertaking a major brand refresh in the US, investing $400 million to ramp up advertising and renovate its top 800 restaurants.
According to a letter filed with the state Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity in 2023, EYM King of Michigan LLC plans to close 26 locations throughout Michigan. This closure will impact 424 employees.
Burger King franchisees in Michigan have announced the closure of 26 locations and layoff of 424 employees due to an "unforeseen business circumstance," the company states. These closures will affect cities such as Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, Ferndale, Flint, Highland Park, Livonia Royal Oak Southfield Walled Lake Warren and Whitmore Lake in the Detroit area.
EYM King of Michigan LLC, a Texas-based corporation that owns and operates the restaurants, is closing them down. On March 22nd they sent a Warning Notice to the state Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity.
According to the letter, EYM King of Michigan had been unable to reach an agreement with Burger King Corp. regarding renewal of their franchise agreements and thus, has decided to cease operations.
Restaurant Brands International reported a net income of $336 million for the final three months of 2022, yet domestic sales were down. With the global pandemic and ongoing inflation, many fast food chains have been struggling to recover.
Burger King franchisees face financial strain due to unforeseen issues. For instance, Meridian Restaurants Unlimited - a major 118-unit franchisee - filed for bankruptcy in the fall of 2018.
Burger King has been struggling to rebound. To restore their sales, Restaurant Brands International plans to invest $400 million in marketing and remodels across its top 800 US restaurants.
However, that has not been enough to guarantee Burger King a successful comeback in the U.S. As such, they are currently undertaking a brand reset to restore their reputation as an elite fast-food chain.
Additionally, the company has a new CEO who is charged with revitalizing US growth. This could have an immense impact on the future of fast-food chains nationwide.
Due to this, it's essential for burger lovers to know which restaurants will be closed so they can find another location to satiate their cravings. This task may prove challenging if you live in Detroit as driving out there can be quite the endeavor! Fortunately, there are other options available which you can select from.
Global pandemic and inflation have caused havoc to the fast food industry, leaving many restaurants with fewer customers and lower profits. As a result, several restaurant closures across America have taken place, including Burger King locations.
In Michigan, Burger King franchisees plan to close 26 locations by April 2023, displacing 424 employees. These locations are spread out throughout metro Detroit with most of them located within Detroit itself.
On March 22, EYM King of Michigan LLC, located in Irving, Texas, informed the state Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity that it will be closing its restaurants due to an unexpected business circumstance and inability to reach an operating agreement with Burger King Corporation. The company noted that this decision had been prompted by an unforeseen business circumstance.
According to a letter sent out last month, 26 Burger King locations will be closing their doors by April 15th. These restaurants are located in Dearborn Heights (20601 West Warren Ave), Ecorse (20402 Southfield Rd), Ferndale (21055 Flint Road), Highland Park (20040 Highland Park Blvd), Livonia (34835 Plymouth Road), Royal Oak (3055 West Woodward Avenue), Southfield (20203 East Madison Ave), Walled Lake (28202 North Plymouth Road) and Whitmore Lake (29995 Plymouth Rd). All 26 restaurants must close their doors by April 15th!
Franchisees must notify employees of closures via a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letter, which is required under federal law so workers may be eligible for compensation and benefits.
Some of these locations will be closing their doors within the next week, while others will remain open through April 15. Unfortunately, all these closures will have an impact on the lives of many people living in and around this area.
These layoffs will be a devastating blow for the employees of these restaurants and an immense setback for the local community as well.
It's impossible to predict whether these closures will benefit or harm the local economy, but they do highlight how difficult it is for chains like Burger King to remain profitable in an era when consumers are wary of visiting fast food restaurants.
Burger King Corporation has made significant changes to their operations over the last several years, including a $400 million initiative to revitalize their brand. This will include marketing initiatives, menu modifications and improvements at over 3,500 Burger King restaurants around the world.

EYM reported that their company failed to reach an operating agreement with Burger King Corp. The closures will affect nearly 424 workers, including general managers, shift managers and team members.
EYM announced in a letter to the state Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity that their closures are necessary due to an unexpected business condition.
It noted that it intended to reopen some locations with different operators in the future. The chain has experienced several closures over the years, though it wasn't immediately clear whether this was a one-off occurrence or part of an ongoing pattern.
Fast food chain McDonald's is renowned for its iconic Big Boy burger. Although the design has evolved over time, a classic version remains popular today.
Burger King locations typically serve the Big Boy on their menus. Choose from several varieties such as a regular patty with cheese, fried chicken patty, quarter-pounder and Double Whopper for maximum satisfaction!
Aside from its delicious burgers, the chain also serves fries, shakes, milkshakes and other beverages. Not to mention its desserts which are always delicious!
However, Burger King faces a major challenge in keeping customers coming back. A recent survey conducted by YouGov BrandIndex indicated that U.S. consumers are disgruntled about Burger King's relocation to Canada; this move could negatively affect customer loyalty and revenue for the chain.
