BLACKPINK Opens Up About Their
Journey to Becoming K-Pop Icons: BLACKPINK will make history at Coachella 2023 as the first K-pop girl group to headline the festival, joining Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny and elusive singer-songwriter Frank Ocean for two weekends of music in Indio, California.

Jisoo, Jennie, Rose and Lisa experience a mix of memories, nerves and excitement as they eagerly await their big moment onstage.

Jisoo:?It’s a big moment for us.

YG Entertainment's newest global superstars BLACKPINK have achieved great success on their way to the top of K-pop, selling over 1.2 million albums worldwide. But behind all that fame lies a serious business that comes with its challenges and hardships.

K-pop is often defined by a rigorous trainee system, designed to prepare future artists for success in their fields. But YG's training approach stands out from many others, providing more of a holistic perspective on mental health and addressing social and emotional difficulties faced by singers during their early years.

Blackpink have endured some challenging times throughout their career, yet they always maintain a positive outlook. The four girls met through YG's common training program which involves regular monthly tests as well as an intense curriculum of performance, choreography and styling.

But more than that, the four members have formed deep connections and lifelong friends. These bonds have helped them get through some of their most trying moments in careers.

Despite the pressures of being part of a major music group, its members aren't afraid to open up about their personal lives to fans. In fact, they've become known for speaking out on issues affecting them collectively as a unit.

Coachella headlining has been an iconic moment in their careers, but it's just one of many high-profile partnerships that have kept them busy over the years. From fashion brand collaborations to relationships with other artists, here are the biggest deals that have propelled Blackpink to success in this industry.

Jisoo

Kim Jisoo, the oldest member of BLACKPINK, has always embodied classic South Korean beauty with her classic yet elegant aesthetic. Her global brand ambassadorship for several high-profile labels such as French luxury label Celine has earned her numerous ad campaigns and magazine covers over time.

Jisoo is eager to return to the stage and showcase her band's talents once again. Playing in the desert was a big step for them and Jisoo hopes this opportunity will allow her to prove herself as an impressive headliner once more.

Jennie:?It’s a great opportunity.

BLACKPINK has quickly become one of the world's most beloved girl groups, garnering widespread success. Their digital tracks have sold over 1.2 million downloads, they've been a mainstay at music festivals like Coachella, and they've collaborated with renowned music icons such as Lady Gaga and Cardi B. With such success comes great responsibility - BLACKPINK deserves every bit of it!

Though they have achieved global success, each member brings their own talent and contributions to the industry. Jennie Kim, for instance, is the lead rapper of the group and she not only stands out with her powerful vocals and stage presence but also has an eye for fashion and style.

She developed a love for rap at an early age, drawing inspiration from artists such as Lauryn Hill and TLC. When she decided to pursue a career in this industry, she studied vocal coaching with Shin Yoo-Mi.

In 2016, she made her K-pop quartet debut, which debuted in August 2016. Since then, they have released numerous chart-topping hits such as "Ddu-du Ddu-du" off their first EP Square Up and the singles "How You Like That" and "Boombayah" from their full-length album The Album.

She not only raps, but she also sings and contributes to the group's choreography. With a background in dance from New Zealand's ACG Parnell College under her belt, she's no novice to this craft.

She manages to find time for a healthy lifestyle, including flying yoga and Pilates - forms of movement which gently challenge your body to strengthen and stretch. Despite her hectic schedule, she always manages to squeeze in time for these important things!

According to reports, she hits the gym five days a week for an hour-long session. Additionally, she incorporates strength training exercises like kettlebells and plyometrics into her regimen.

When she's not traveling, she loves spending quality time with her dogs Kuma and Kai. Additionally, she enjoys cooking and baking - so much that she even wrote a song about it (BLACKPINK Private Stage)!

Jennie is an intense "YG Princess" when on stage, yet an intensely sensitive "Mandu" when off it. To de-stress, Jennie enjoys spending time with her dogs and cleaning up her room; plus, she enjoys going for long walks to clear her mind.

Rose:?It’s a great experience.

K-pop stars have much to be proud of this year, but Coachella festival in the desert is their big break. With a billboard-sized stage and an audience ranging from hundreds to thousands, being chosen as main entertainment at such an iconic festival takes some guts. But with these accolades in hand, a generous budget, and some luck on their side, these daring women have managed to put together an unforgettable night to remember.

Lisa:?It’s a great feeling.

Five years after starting as trainees, Blackpink have achieved the pinnacle of K-pop success and their latest single, "Pink Venom," is set to become their biggest hit yet. This comes after a year that saw them release an album, headline Coachella music festival and score an iconic fashion collaboration with MapleStory.

While the girls' success is a testament to their hard work and talent, it hasn't always been smooth sailing. In a new Netflix original documentary called "Blackpink: Light Up the Sky," director Caroline Suh shows us that life for these girls isn't all sunshine and roses; there are moments of doubt and uncertainty which highlight that this isn't simply an escape into self-satisfaction but rather a life lived for their fans.

Suh's film is captivating due to her ability to capture the group's effortless harmony both onstage and off. All the girls are accomplished in their own ways, yet they also work together and support one another.

That collaboration is evident in their style, which combines luxury, novelty and the underground -- with just enough cuteness thrown in for good measure. Min-hee Park, YG Entertainment's in-house stylist, oversees each member's looks to best showcase each individuality.

However, it's the teamwork the girls have built to become successful as a band that has propelled them to the top of the industry. When it counts most - such as during their initial Coachella performances last year or when embarking on an album release tour - the girls come together and deliver.

The documentary depicts their close-knit friendship. We hear them share their opinions on their careers and growth as artists throughout the course of the documentary; Jennie even mentions feeling more at ease performing as a lead after performing as "Solo" last year at the festival.
