Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel to Star in 'Mother Mary' Film
The Blessed Virgin Mary is one of history's most revered figures. She is believed to have conceived Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit and has since played an essential role in Christianity's development.
Anne Hathaway is taking her rock star persona to A24 film "Mother Mary," directed by David Lowery and featuring an epic pop melodramas about a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with renowned fashion designer (Coel).
Deadline reports that David Lowery will direct an "epic pop melodrama" starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, according to Deadline. The director of 2021's hallucinatory fantasy The Green Knight and 2017's A Ghost Story has rejoined Oscar-winning production studio A24 for his next movie, Mother Mary.
According to Deadline, the movie will follow a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Coel). The actress, whose credits include The Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted, is going full rock star for this one.
Michaela Coel will join her, having earned widespread acclaim for her TV series I May Destroy You. She's also been in the Black Panther movies and recently featured in Rebecca Miller's She Came to Me costarring Jersey's Peter Dinklage.
Mother Mary was written by Lowery, who previously directed Everything Everywhere All at Once and Pete's Dragon. Along with Toby Halbrooks, James M. Johnston and Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo and Jonathan Saubach from augenschein Filmproduktion of Cologne are producing the project as well.
Dubbed an "epic pop melodramas," David Lowery will direct this film which stars Anne Hathaway as a fictional musician and Michaela Coel as an iconic fashion designer. Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX will write and produce original music for the project; Daniel Hart, who scored Lowery's films The Green Knight and A Ghost Story, will also contribute.
Fans of super-producer Jack Antonoff and British pop idol Charli XCX will find this soundtrack to be a dream come true. These two big-time songwriters have collaborated previously with Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey.
Lowery and A24 have made a major move by inviting some of pop music's most acclaimed talents to their latest collaboration. It's safe to say this will be one of the year's most anticipated releases.
A24 has recruited Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX to compose original songs for their upcoming Mother Mary movie, which stars Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. The narrative follows a fictional musician as she embarks on an exciting journey with an iconic fashion designer; the soundtrack will include new compositions by Antonoff, Charli XCX, as well as original score by Daniel Hart.
Antonoff is a Grammy-winning producer and songwriter who's collaborated with an array of artists. His most recent collaboration was with Lana Del Rey on "A&W", released on Valentine's Day. Additionally, he's collaborated with Taylor Swift, Lorde and Clairo; additionally scoring films and TV shows such as Netflix's One Chance featuring Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen.
The Bleachers frontman has a knack for crafting music that stands out. That's what made him such an original choice on Taylor Swift's folklore album, and his work on Lana Del Rey's song "A&W" is no different. Additionally, he's been busy working with Charli XCX, writing and producing her hit single "Boys" for her landmark album Crash due out in March 2022.
No surprise then that these two are working together again, crafting the soundtrack for A24's upcoming film Mother Mary, directed by David Lowery and featuring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel as fictional musicians and iconic fashion designers, respectively.
Antonoff and Charli have collaborated before for film soundtracks; last year they wrote and produced the original single "Hot Girl" for Bodies Bodies Bodies, an A24 movie released in 2021. Meanwhile, Lowery is a well-known figure within movie music circles; he directed 2017 supernatural drama A Ghost Story as well as 2021 medieval epic The Green Knight.
So it makes sense that Antonoff would collaborate with the 21-year-old singer, who has never shied away from experimentation in her music. While we can't predict exactly what will be featured in their final product, we are confident that they'll create some truly remarkable things together.
Director David Lowery returns to A24 for another dark pop-star tale featuring an unemployed musician (Anne Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Michaela Coel). This marks Lowery's third collaboration with A24 after The Green Knight and A Ghost Story.
A24 and Lowery will release the film in 2023, with Topic Studios co-financing with A24.
With the recent surge of dark pop star stories, such as Natalie Portman's Vox Lux and HBO and The Weeknd's The Idol, more films need to explore these genres. With several projects currently in production, the future looks promising for these kinds of projects.
It's easy to see why filmmakers are drawn to these types of stories. While they often feature serious topics and explore the darker sides of pop culture, they don't lack for lighthearted moments either.
One of the best examples of this is Mary, Mother of Jesus. This 1999 made-for-television Biblical drama retells Jesus' story through Mary's eyes while also exploring her unique and intimate relationship with her son.
Since then, numerous films have been made about Mary's life. One such film, 2006's "The Nativity Story," marked a turning point in filmmaking by focusing on Jesus' childhood stories.
Another notable example is the 2012 miniseries "Mary of Nazareth." This two-part 200 minute production aired on Italian television and featured Alissa Jung as Mary.
These films portray Mary differently, yet both share a faith and respect for this remarkable woman. Both emphasize her close relationship with Jesus and the joy she experienced at His resurrection, as well as the immense suffering she endured as mother of the savior of the world.
No matter your opinion, the story of Jesus' birth is one of history's most significant episodes. Not only does it teach us so much about love and sacrifice, but also gives us an intimate look into Jesus' life.
Today we learned that Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel have joined the cast of A24's upcoming film, "Mother Mary." Directed by David Lowery (who previously collaborated on 2021's The Green Knight), this epic pop melodrama follows a fictional musician played by Hathaway as she navigates her relationship with an iconic fashion designer played by Coel. Additionally, there will be original music from Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX with Daniel Hart scoring the picture.
Lowery will direct from a script he wrote, producing alongside Toby Halbrooks and James M. Johnston of A24 as well as Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions and Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo and Jonathan Saubach from Cologne-based augenschein Filmproduktion. The project will be shot in Germany with funding provided by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and DFFF with A24 handling worldwide distribution.
Hathaway and Coel may come as a surprise pairing, but their versatility in genre work makes sense. They have appeared in films such as Armageddon Time and Interstellar, musicals like Les Miserables, action movies like The Dark Knight Rises, and romantic comedies like Princess Diaries or One Day.
Hathaway is known for her roles as both actress and writer/director in films such as Eileen, which premiered at Sundance and stars her in a role with queer undertones. Additionally, Hathaway has several projects in development like Peter Pan & Wendy for Disney+ featuring Jude Law and Alan Tudyk.
Coel is an accomplished multi-talented artist, having achieved success as a playwright, screenwriter, director, showrunner, poet and author. She created the award-winning British series I May Destroy You and can be seen as part of Dora Milaje in Wakanda Forever. Coel will next star in Amazon's Mr. & Mrs. Smith series while also developing a new South African film project.
Both actors have achieved amazing successes with their careers, and we look forward to seeing them together in this upcoming film. Hopefully they both do justice to the roles that they are portraying.
