White Men Can’t Jump White Men Can't Jump is an undeniable classic from Ron Shelton thanks to its cast of unforgettable performers, led by Wesley Snipes (Sidney) and Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) as two street ball hustlers who combine forces to take on 2-on-2 basketball tournaments for big money. But the remake of this sports drama doesn't do much with its premise, opting instead for a fairly conventional and formulaic story that lacks many of the key components that made its predecessor so beloved. Unfortunately, this new adaptation fails even with two talented actors taking on lead roles. Rapper and actor Jack Harlow makes his big-screen debut as Jeremy, a former basketball star whose injuries ended his career. Harlow is an outstanding fit for this part, giving a grounded yet charismatic performance. Harlow's co-star in this movie Sinqua Walls gives an equally credible performance as Kamal, an impoverished barber struggling to support his family. The supporting cast here, however, is mostly wasted space. There's the requisite sneering and backstabbing, as well as unnecessary scenes that take away from the story's natural rhythms. Furthermore, flashbacks that seem out-of-place often interrupt this film as well as longer sequences where either Kamal or Jeremy engages in some sort of physical altercation with one another. White Men Can't Jump's biggest problem lies in its overt agenda, which it fails to cover up very effectively. The film uses its racially charged themes as an excuse for unnecessarily broad and offensive moments, using two main characters' tenuous relationships as fodder for cheap jokes and stereotyping; its only redeeming quality lies in Taylor and her co-stars having undeniably strong chemistry together; Hulu will stream this remake starring BlacKkKlansman Laura Harrier Vince Staples and Lance Reddick before hitting Hulu on May 19; it is rated R.
