Heterosexism can also be observed through laws that limit the benefits that homosexual couples are eligible for. For instance, in the US a gay couple is only legally recognised as a partnership if they enter into legal marriage - leaving them at a significant disadvantage in terms of accessing many government and employer-provided benefits available only to heterosexual couples. Feminist viewpoints critique sexist beliefs that link sexuality with power. Additionally, they challenge any notion that men's dominance over women is inherent and inevitable - which has contributed to objectification of women by men and domestic abuse/sexual assault against them. Gender Identity Gender identity is part of who people are; whether that be female, male, or somewhere in between. Gender can differ from sexual orientation - which refers to our ability to find attraction to people of either the same or different sexes (i.e. heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual). People often conflate gender with sex; however, these two concepts should not be mixed up. Gender refers to an internal sense of being either male, female, or somewhere in-between while sex refers to external arrangements of genes, hormones, and body parts. As children develop, they develop gender identities based on their experiences and environments. Over time, children learn whether they identify as boys or girls, and can choose to play with friends of similar gender as well as engage in sports or other activities that conform with this understanding. This phenomenon is known as gender expression as it often manifests outwardly through clothing styles, hair styles, voices or mannerisms; pronoun usage or name usage may also play a part. Gender plays an essential part in modern societies, from how individuals are treated and perceived, to stereotypes such as expecting men to be hard and soft on women; such expectations can cause stress and discomfort for some individuals, leading them to experience gender dysphoria - an anxiety condition caused by conflict with assigned sexes. Gender is an integral component of life and should be respected and affirmed. There are different ways people express their gender; no matter what others think or say about you.
