@SnoopDogg Returns @DeathRow Catalog to Streaming Services
Snoop Dogg has brought Death Row Records' iconic catalog back onto streaming services. Last year, when he acquired the label, Snoop pulled the albums from services; but now they're back for streaming enjoyment.
Death Row's streaming releases include Dre's The Chronic, Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle and Tupac Shakur's All Eyez on Me. Furthermore, various compilations have been made available online as well.
Last year, Snoop Dogg announced the removal of his Death Row catalog from streaming services. Now it can be found on Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer and other platforms. In addition to Snoop's classic debut album Doggystyle (minus "Gz Up, Hoes Down") and Tha Doggfather, this reissue includes albums from Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Lady of Rage Kurupt Tha Dogg Pound soundtracks Above the Rim Murder Was the Case Gridlock'd and more works.
Re-release comes after Snoop purchased Death Row brand from MNRK Music Group in February 2022, helping to revive both label and artists. This came despite various scandals, lawsuits and controversies which had dogged the label for years.
Snoop's return to streaming services is a welcome development for the hip-hop community. Streaming services have become an increasingly important source of revenue for both artists and labels alike, but Death Row's catalog being removed from many platforms has left many fans feeling left out in the cold.
Last April, Snoop revealed to Drink Champs that Death Row's music had been removed from major streaming services due to their failure to pay artists enough for their work. He had previously discussed launching a dedicated Death Row streaming platform to host the label's music.
Snoop Dogg's recent re-release of Death Row's catalog is a welcome addition to any hip-hop music fan's library. This compilation includes Snoop's first two albums - Doggystyle and Tha Doggfather - Tupac Shakur's All Eyez on Me and The Don Killuminati's 7 Day Theory, Lady of Rage's Necessary Roughness, Kurupt's Against the Grain and more.
On Thursday (March 9), Snoop Dogg, owner of gangsta rap label Death Row, announced that its iconic catalog would be returning to streaming services. Last year the West Coast rapper had completely removed all content from all platforms.
Snoop Dogg will be re-releasing his albums onto streaming services starting March 10, just in time for the 2022 Super Bowl. Additionally, he's teaming up with TikTok to bring the music to other traditional platforms as well.
The Death Row catalog boasts some of Snoop Dogg's classic albums, such as Doggystyle and Tha Doggfather. You'll also find timeless hits from 2Pac and Nate Dogg.
With the release of his debut album, Doggystyle, in 1992, Snoop Dogg found himself on an upward trajectory towards stardom. His career took off quickly and soon he was joining Dre for The Chronic.
However, his success came with much controversy and pressure from fans and critics alike. Eventually, Snoop Dogg was acquitted of murder charges in February 1996.
After being cleared of charges, Snoop Dogg faced new legal obligations and an altered work environment. He needed to find a way to continue Doggystyle without Dre producing it.
Thankfully for Snoop, his first cousin Daz Dillinger of the legendary Dillinger Family graciously agreed to serve as producer on this album with him.
Snoop Dogg's album was a moderate success, peaking at number one on both Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. It marked an important turning point in his career as well as that of gangsta rap culture; however, after some time the tide started to turn against them.
Tupac Shakur's music addressed a range of issues, such as poverty, racism, and growing up in American ghettos. He has been dubbed the "Godfather of Hip Hop" and is considered one of the greatest rappers ever.
In 1996, Shakur signed with Death Row Records and released his debut album All Eyez on Me - widely considered to be one of the greatest albums in rap history. It won him the 1996 Soul Train Music Award for best rap album.
Snoop Dogg and Pac formed a close bond during their tenure on Death Row, leading to their collaboration on the hit single "2 of America's Most Wanted" from All Eyez on Me. Unfortunately, Pac was tragically shot in Las Vegas in 1996, so there would not be time for Pac to record another album after All Eyez On Me.
The West Coast rap legend credits Pac with teaching him the value of hard work and striving for what you want. This is said to have been one of the primary reasons for his success as a recording artist and even founded his own label and brand, Def Jam Recordings.
Snoop Dogg has a varied musical background, but is best known for his work as an acclaimed rapper and songwriter. With more than 20 albums under his belt, the multi-platinum selling recording artist continues to gain notoriety.
On March 9, Snoop Dogg announced the return of his entire Death Row Records catalog to streaming services this week. This marks a major milestone in their partnership with Apple-backed music company gamma, which launched last year.
Snoop Dogg's early albums, Doggystyle and Tha Dogfather, are now available to stream on TikTok alongside classic recordings from Lady of Rage, Kurupt, Danny Boy and Jewell - among others. This collection will remain accessible throughout the remainder of this week.
Last year, Snoop Dogg took over Death Row Records and has now re-released their entire catalog to all streaming services. He shared the news via Instagram on Thursday, allowing fans to listen to their beloved west coast albums once again.
As many of you may recall, Snoop Dogg took Death Row Records off streaming platforms a few months back to modernize it for the digital era. While it seems unlikely that he will make Death Row Records an NFT (Networked Printing Press), it's good to see such an iconic label back online streaming services.
The catalog boasts classic '90s hip hop releases from Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur and 2Pac. Albums like Dre's The Chronic; Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle and Tha Doggfather; Tupac's All Eyez on Me and The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory; Lady of Rage's Necessary Roughness and Kurupt's Against the Grain can all be streamed on services like Spotify or TIDAL.
Snoop Dogg has joined former Apple Executive Larry Jackson's new company gamma to re-release the Death Row catalog across all streaming services. This partnership is beneficial to both parties since gamma is a one-stop media company that creates, distributes and markets music, podcasts and films that elevate Black artists.
Hopefully this marks the start of more collaborations between Snoop and other hip-hop artists. He shows an understanding of music's power to transform lives, so this could be something special. For now, it's a great opportunity for Snoop to rerelease his music and reconnect with his fans once again. It is likely that Snoop will continue releasing new material on this platform in the future.
Snoop Dogg has finally taken his thumb out of his mouth and brought Death Row Records' legendary catalog back online for streaming. The West Coast rap legend posted on Instagram on Thursday (March 9) to announce that the iconic collection will be accessible everywhere starting at 9pm PST today.
Snoop shared a Death Row-themed video montage, which showcases some of the label's most iconic music moments. While this announcement brings joy to fans of West Coast hip-hop culture, it also presents an opportunity for new listeners to experience some of rap music's iconic works.
Kurupt's Space Boogie (2017) is his third album for Death Row and while it may not be up to par with his previous works, it still manages to be one of the best albums of its era. On this record, Kurupt brings an artistic approach to his lyrics through various motifs such as feel-good Cali-sunshine vibes and theatrical gangsta music.
He also utilizes some esteemed West Coast guests, such as Xzibit and Nate Dogg. Fredwreck also contributes to his catalog with many successful rap albums.
The album may be a bit lengthy, but the tracks that make it worth hearing are all great. The standout track is "Heart Monitor Riddim," featuring grime MCs Blacks, P Money and Footsie.
This tie-in for the show, as well as a humorous rap record with plenty of laughs. There's the speed-rapped junglist "Original Rudeboyz," hardcore breaks'n'horns of the title track and even an extra Mediterranean love song from Kurupt FM manager Chabuddy G.
