2023 NFL draft combine workouts preview Top prospects

On Thursday afternoon in Indianapolis, the 2023 NFL draft combine will get underway with hundreds of prospects taking part in on-field drills alongside NFL executives and coaches. The workouts will run from 3-8 p.m.

The combine is a vital standardized event where NFL teams evaluate top prospects in an organized setting. Throughout the week-long event, team personnel conduct measurements, medical exams and interviews with prospective teammates.

Quentin Johnston

TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston is considered one of the top prospects in this year's draft class. He recently announced that he will participate in the NFL Scouting Combine and get his chance to shine on Lucas Oil Stadium field this week.

He's a tall and strong wide receiver with remarkable speed for his size. Additionally, he's an effective red zone threat which should help him create some separation in the NFL.

Johnston is a two-time First-Team All-Big 12 pick, having finished his collegiate career with an incredible 97.1 receiving grade on deep ball routes. He's not afraid to run either slant or hitch routes either, making him an effective target in the open field as well. If his injury-free career continues at this rate, Johnston should thrive at the next level.

His speed and length make him a nightmare for defensive backs; he also displays impressive lateral agility to avoid challenges. After catching the ball, his balance and suddenness surprise opponents as well as an elite runner who can burn defenders downfield in short yardage games.

He possesses a solid set of hands and is capable of boxing out defenders on the ground with his frame, length and physicality. Unfortunately, he's not yet an effective hands catcher which may lead to dropped balls from time to time.

Johnston stands as one of the brightest stars in an array of talented young receivers. With his size, length and speed, Johnston can be a major threat in the NFL and seems to make big gains with ease.

He boasts a high ceiling and could be the first receiver taken in this year's draft class. But his stock will depend on how he performs at the combine and whether or not he can improve upon his 4.4-second 40-yard dash time from last season. If he can demonstrate that at 6'4" 215 pounds, then there is an excellent chance for him to go in the first round of this year's draft.

Kayshon Boutte

Kayshon Boutte has a lot to offer the 2023 NFL draft, and teams are eagerly awaiting his potential combine workouts. He's an impressive talent at the position with great speed and hands that could make him a playmaking star in the league.

His size is an advantage, enabling him to run with bigger men or use his impressive speed to get around them. He's also capable of making hard catches and is highly durable. He can line up inside or outside and is an excellent run-after-catch player.

He's had his share of injuries and off-field issues, but his talent remains undiminished. With improved release off the line of scrimmage, he could become one of the premier receivers in the NFL.

If Boutte continues to hone his skills, it wouldn't be surprising if he ends up in the first round of the draft. While he might not be a top-10 selection, several NFL teams would love to have him as an impact player on their rosters.

The Green Bay Packers are one of them. The Pack needs a dynamic receiver, and Boutte's ability to run with bigger defenders could be ideal. Furthermore, the team could use a veteran option, and Boutte would make an ideal backup behind Aaron Rodgers.

Another team that could be interested in him is the New York Giants. They have an immediate need for a receiver and believe he has the skillset to be their top pick.

This class of wide receivers is loaded, and several players are in the running for first-round picks. Still, there are some unanswered questions with this group that need to be addressed.

Kayshon Boutte is a potential top-10 candidate in the 2023 NFL draft and possesses the size to make an immediate impact as an NFL wideout. He boasts impressive speed which allows him to run with big men or line up inside. Furthermore, Boutte can make plays from deep balls with ease due to his combination of speed and hands - making him an invaluable asset for any NFL team.

Tyreque Jones

The NFL Scouting Combine provides young football players with a platform to showcase their skills and talents before scouts, coaches and the public. It's one of the most significant events in professional football; a successful performance could potentially boost draft stock by multiple rounds.

At this year's NFL draft combine, over 300 prospects from college football have been invited. Over the next few weeks they will participate in workouts and interviews with NFL teams as well as taking a series of key measurements and receiving full medical exams.

Boise State defensive back Tyreque Jones has been receiving much attention this year, particularly with his transition into the nickel position. Throughout his six years at Boise State, Jones appeared in 48 games with 157 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and four interceptions.

He is a two-time All-Mountain West honoree and an athletic defender who can play multiple positions due to his combination of size and speed.

At 6-foot-2 and 206 pounds, Jones possesses ideal size for the safety position. He possesses quickness to swat away receivers in press coverage, as well as range to attack downhill from a high safety alignment.

Jones can use his speed during practice for the East-West Shrine Bowl to make an impression on scouts at this year's combine. It will be interesting to see if Jones' athleticism translates into agility drills and how his basketball background (he had Division-I scholarship offers coming out of high school) influences his playstyle.

Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs is another intriguing prospect. Some consider him the top running back in this class, while others believe he should be a Day 2 pick.

He is an impressive athlete, yet there remain doubts about his knee health and ability to play at the next level. These questions should be answered this week at the NFL Combine where he will have the chance to shine on the biggest stage.

JL Skinner

JL Skinner, a 2023 NFL Draft prospect from Boise State and Cleveland Browns, is an impressive defender who can stop the run with great effort. He boasts excellent closing speed and works downhill from his third level of defense.

He possesses the physical tools to be an excellent starter at safety in an NFL defense. His size and long speed make him ideal as a robber/low-hole strong safety in a Cover 3 defense, while his physicality allows him to play well inside the box and be an impressive tackler.

At Boise State, Skinner earned 208 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and seven interceptions. Additionally, he had 12 pass breakups and 12 passes defended.

Skinner has enjoyed great success during his college career and now faces the daunting prospect of being an NFL player in Indianapolis. He could easily be one of the top draft picks at safety in 2023 and could make a great player for the Colts.

Skinner is an impressive 6-foot-4, 211-pound player with impressive size and body control. He possesses the athleticism to move quickly and change directions rapidly; thus his 40 times will be crucial in determining his stock at the NFL combine this week.

He could be an excellent safety in the right situation, though his biggest weakness is a lack of range and depth. Nonetheless, he poses a threat to shut down offense's most dynamic mismatch and displays discipline when asked for play-by-play coverage.

As a junior in 2021, Skinner started 12 games and made 716 snaps at safety. He recorded 72 tackles, 16 assists and added 39 stops while covering passes. As the secondary playmaker he forced 4 pass breakups, 2 interceptions and gave up a QB rating when targeted of 106.8.

Skinner was an impressive safety, as well as a standout cornerback with the speed and agility to play the slot position in an NFL defense. He's poised to be a top pick at safety in 2023 and could potentially reach the top 50 if his abilities continue to develop.
