2023-2024: Lakers Considering New Arena As LeBron James Eyes NBA Owner

2023-2024: Lakers Considering New Arena As LeBron James Eyes NBA Owner

The Lakers have found themselves in a tough spot this season. Their young and inexperienced roster has struggled mightily and has shown little signs of improvement thus far. James has publicly expressed his desire to win more championships with the Lakers, yet their current roster does not appear equipped for that goal. Anthony Davis from New Orleans Pelicans may provide them with an edge they need. What will the new arena look like? Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is investing lavishly in creating a modern sports palace for his billionaire teams to move into, which will serve as home to both basketball's Lakers and Clippers as well as hockey's Kings. AECOM and Hunt and Turner designed this cutting-edge arena. Among its amenities are high-tech advertising boards, sleek kiosks and an expansive FOX sports cafe. In addition, its main concourse resembles a mall with outdoor patios so fans can step outside and take in California weather. It will feature a "Chairman's Club," designed for season ticket members and VIP guests with two new LED screens, along with redesign of Impact Sports Bar & Grill on the main concourse, dining areas in Yaamava and Lexus clubs, updated locker rooms for NBA and NHL, as well as other features. Additionally, this arena will become carbon neutral with enough on-site energy storage capacity for an entire game - an innovative feature of an NBA arena and one that serves as a selling point for Ballmer. Although not as spacious, the Staples Center will have more of an inviting feel which should help bring fans out for Lakers games more efficiently. This change could prove especially important considering their struggles attracting spectators to their games in recent seasons. The Lakers have made some improvements this summer, yet remain an uphill struggle in winning championships. That is why Pelinka must secure one or more superstar players for his roster. At the trade deadline, he executed effectively by using expiring contracts to acquire players like Patrick Beverley and Malik Beasley with expiring contracts. While giving up a 2027 first-round pick in exchange for Russell Westbrook, no protections were inserted which would make moving that pick down the road difficult; that marked an improvement over previous offseasons when Los Angeles had little flexibility; perhaps not enough to lure James back but certainly an encouraging start for L.A. Who will play in it? The new arena will seat 18,000 fans and feature a practice facility, sports medical clinic, team offices and retail space - as well as public plaza with basketball courts available for community use. Partnering with design firm AECOM to craft this climate positive arena was key. Solar panels and batteries will generate its own power to keep its climate positive status intact. The City will invest $70 million into this project, located on the former Great Western Forum site. According to AEG's statement, no property or sales taxes will be collected as repayment by them from this investment. In addition to NBA and NHL games, concerts, family events and award presentations will also take place here. AEG has pledged its commitment to using eco-friendly technologies at each of its venues through AEG 1EARTH, its comprehensive environmental program geared toward reducing energy use across its properties and tracking it closely. AEG 1EARTH seeks a 20% decrease in electricity usage and greenhouse gas emissions as well as increasing renewable energy use while simultaneously decreasing water usage. As part of its efforts to help protect the environment, AEG plans on installing solar panels at each of its arenas. Furthermore, this company will invest in electric car charging stations at each venue; additionally they plan on recycling or reusing materials at every venue they manage. If the NBA lockout extends into fall, its effects will be felt both by teams and arenas. Cancellated games may prove difficult to replace for smaller markets. Furthermore, individual lease agreements will vary greatly when considering financial effects. The Lakers have long been considered one of the premier franchises in basketball history, having amassed 19 conference championships and 33 division titles since being founded in 1947, before even the official formation of the National Basketball Association. LeBron James is a two-time NBA Champion who was instrumental in leading his team back-to-back championship runs in 2009 and 2010. They're hoping to add another top player this offseason as they attempt to capture their fifth championship. How much will it cost? LeBron James' decision will have a tremendous effect on the Lakers. While they boast talented roster members like Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram, more star power will be necessary in order to compete against Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets in Western Conference. Therefore, it's expected that they will attempt to sign a marquee free agent that could team with James to power back to the top of league. One name being discussed is former Cleveland Cavaliers guard Paul George, who had expressed interest in joining the Lakers but has reportedly found themselves unwilling to commit long-term due to their history with him. According to reports, they offered him a five-year contract worth $90 million but George wants more. It remains to be seen if they will meet George's demands or not. The Lakers need James on the court in order to compete with teams like the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets, having lost him due to a foot injury for over a month now. Even so, there remains hope that James may return next season and help them challenge these top two West teams more effectively. LeBron James has made no secret of his desire to own an NBA franchise some day, including Las Vegas based teams in an episode of his YouTube show The Shop last June. Though he possesses enough funds to purchase a franchise, his path is currently blocked by the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), due to him still being an active player. Although its expiry is scheduled for after 2023-24 season, expansion likely won't come sooner. Will LeBron James join the Lakers? LeBron James has already proven his capabilities on Cleveland by helping them break their championship curse and reach four straight finals appearances, but now LeBron wants to take up another challenge: helping save Los Angeles Lakers from an era that may never return. But James won't have it easy: to compete with Golden State, the Lakers need co-stars of their own; whether that means trading for Paul George or signing Kawhi Leonard could be necessary, as well as adding veteran point guards and depth at centers and power forward positions. Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball all possess potential but more is necessary if they hope to challenge Golden State. James discussed his interest in joining the Lakers in a podcast with Chris Ryan from The Ringer. During this discussion, James reiterated how important it was for him to surround himself with championship-caliber talent. James noted, "One thing I have learned over my career at several crucial junctures - when going through free agency or owning sole ownership for one year --is making sure my organization is ready. It must not depend on one single transaction." He noted the importance of owning a home in Los Angeles for his family. They currently share both a summer residence with Savannah and their children as well as a permanent place where they reside throughout the year. James remains at an elite level as an NBA player, yet is entering his final few seasons and may want to spend more time with his family. After the Lakers were eliminated from Western Conference finals competition by Denver Nuggets in seven games, James hinted that retirement might be in his future; this decision may take longer to materialize than expected. The Lakers plan on taking this offseason to do their research and build around James without adding major pieces, even without free agency kickoff. Johnson visited James at one of his Los Angeles homes shortly after free agency began on Saturday evening to assure him there would be plenty of time to find suitable teammates for him to play with.
