The RNCM offers a PGCE course that will prepare you to teach music to young people. The course will help you develop teaching and performance skills, and you will learn about embodied methodologies such as Kodaly and Dalcroze. Classes on improvisation, aural approaches, and world music will also be an integral part of your education.
RNCM provides a variety of postgraduate courses for music teachers. Its ethos is to develop students' skills and the ability to work across contexts. In addition to a PGCE, you can also study for an MA in Music Education and Performance.
The Royal Northern College of Music offers a number of different opportunities for young people and their families. One such opportunity is the Centre for Young Musicians, founded in 1970. The Centre offers high-quality, progressive music training to young people aged eight to 18 years. It offers holiday courses, junior and intermediate courses, as well as ensemble training. The Centre is committed to creating relationships with its young participants.
One initiative the college is promoting is the Pathfinder scheme. This initiative, which has been running for six months, aims to break down barriers that prevent young people from pursuing a career in music. It began as a six-month pilot and has now been developed into a three-year programme in partnership with two Manchester Music Education Hubs and the BBC Philharmonic.
Another initiative that the RNCM is promoting is its outreach programmes. The RNCM's outreach programme offers opportunities for young people and families to experience music together in a fun and interactive way. It also holds free family music events. In addition, the college hosts concerts and events with the BBC Philharmonic, Opera North, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Manchester Collective. There are also events in the Bridgewater Hall that are open to the public, and the college hosts three artists-in-residence. The RNCM is also making use of its RNCM50 Fund to support a range of activities and initiatives aimed at families and young people.

For example, the Agar Trust offers grants to support young people from rural areas with exceptional musical potential. These grants provide up to PS2,000 in flexible funding and individual support.
