Heart - or cardiovascular - disease is one of the leading causes of death in much of the industrialized world. At Northwestern Medicine, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons treat patients with a range of conditions such as coronary artery disease, valve disorders, heart failure and more complex issues.

A cardiologist evaluates your health, helps you comprehend your risk factors, provides treatment options and determines whether surgery or nonsurgical treatments such as balloon angioplasty (inserting balloons to clear arteries), stents or other techniques are necessary. They may also refer you to a cardiac surgeon for more complex surgical procedures like coronary artery bypass surgery or heart valve replacements.

Cardiac surgeons are highly-trained experts in cardiac surgery, possessing extensive training and experience performing complex operations. As such, they may be the only ones qualified to perform certain operations such as coronary artery bypass surgery and valve repairs on hearts.

Recently, some doctors have turned to minimally invasive techniques for treating cardiovascular diseases without the need to operate on the heart. One such procedure, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), allows doctors to replace diseased aortic valves through blood vessels rather than through an open heart operation.

Northwestern Medical Center has been the pioneer of this revolutionary technique, saving thousands of patients from open-heart surgery and drastically reducing their procedure time, recovery period and mortality risks. Recently, doctors at Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute completed their 2000th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), marking another important milestone in an expanding program that has moved heart valve repair/replacement from the operating room to a catherization lab.

The heart is the most vital organ in your body, and if it's not working optimally you could feel unwell or even die. At Northwestern Medicine, cardiologists and cardiac specialists collaborate to diagnose and treat various heart and cardiovascular diseases as well as provide lifesaving care for those in need.

At our hospital, our cardiologists and surgeons work closely with other experts in various fields such as internal medicine, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), gastroenterology and neurology to guarantee you receive the highest quality care. George informed Patch that the center was created as part of a system-wide initiative to build out an advanced destination center in Orland Park, providing advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities, access to specialty care and clinical trials, as well as an integrated cancer program.
