For a lot of people, the six decades Cher has been recording music is a brief blip in her life. But for a lot of people, the six decades Cher has been recording music is all they know about her. And a lot of people really know a lot about her.

Since You Asked...

No seriously, someone really did ask me. S. Josh Brooks wrote to Cher Scholar asking me to list my 10 favorite Cher songs. I swear. Handily, I already have a list of my top five Cher songs, just in case I'm out on the street and anybody should ask—so picking off five more should be easy-wheezy, I thought. Well, not so! The more I tried to pare the list down, the more favorites ended up being left out—and I even had auxiliary favorites separated out into categories! Needless to say, chaos ensued. This was hard—much harder than narrowing down my favorite albums or movies. But make those difficult, agonizing, sleepless-night choices I did because I'm a trooper. Maybe these lists will spark some of your own.

Cher rose to stardom as part of a singing act with husband Sonny Bono in the 1960s, hitting No. 1 with the single "I Got You Babe" before they starred together on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. Cher established a solo career of her own as well, enjoying chart-toppers like "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady." She pursued acting in the 1980s, starring in films like Silkwood and Mask and earning an Academy Award for her performance in Moonstruck. Cher also found more music success with rock-oriented tracks in the '80s and a global dance hit, "Believe," in the late '90s. Following her concert series at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the artist in 2013 released Closer to the Truth, her first studio album in 12 years. In 2018 she made a celebrated return to the big screen in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!
