After an unprecedented week of high demand, Ticketmaster has cancelled its public sale of Taylor Swift tickets. This came despite promises that tickets would still be available to fans.
Tuesday's presale at Ticketmaster was unprecedented in terms of fan registration and demands on its system, but ultimately too high for it to handle. Furthermore, scalpers snapped up large numbers of tickets at exorbitant prices.
Ticketmaster's Verified Fan Presale has long been a source of frustration for concertgoers. This system requires concertgoers to undergo screening before being allowed to purchase tickets, and has been notorious for causing major outages. Last November, Ticketmaster experienced numerous issues with their Verified Fan presale for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.
According to Ticketmaster, their Verified Fan program was hit with an unprecedented flood of fans eager to buy tickets during the sale. Due to bot attacks and "fans without invite codes," there were so many people trying to purchase tickets during this sale that it essentially crashed the site - leading to hours-long wait times and inflated prices on sites such as StubHub.
In the end, Ticketmaster cancelled its public on-sale and shut down registration for their Verified Fan program altogether. As a result, many fans were left disappointed and frustrated.
However, now Swift fans have another opportunity to buy tickets. Ticketmaster sent emails last month to a select group of Swifties who received an advantage during the Verified Fan presale but did not score tickets, giving them an additional opportunity to purchase their desired seats.
Emails sent from Ticketmaster indicate they apologized for any difficulties they had faced and had been asked by Swift's team to create this additional opportunity. They noted that sales would begin sometime before Dec. 23, with tickets issued in staggered order by tour date in each city.
Once verified, Ticketmaster will send you an email or SMS with your code so you can log in and purchase tickets on either desktop or mobile device.
If you have not yet registered, you can do so here. One day prior to the sale, we will let you know whether you've been invited or not.
In contrast to last month's public on-sale, which had many complaints from fans, this second sale should go off without a hitch. Ticketmaster also assured customers that this presale won't experience the same technical difficulties as before.
One month ago, millions of fans flocked to Ticketmaster in an effort to purchase tickets for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. But they were met with long waits, technical problems, and other inconveniences because the ticketing site -- which has become an industry monopoly since merging with Live Nation 12 years ago -- could not keep up with demand for seats on her tour that was supposed to begin next year.
Ticketmaster reported that its Verified Fan program, which gives fans exclusive access to tickets before others, had become overwhelmed with bots and fans without invite codes. As a result, the website crashed and fans were sent back to the start of the virtual queue with thousands behind them.
Due to this chaos, the company had no choice but to cancel the public on-sale. They claim that demand had become too great for their systems to handle and there simply wasn't enough inventory left to meet it all.
Some fans have taken action against Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation Entertainment over what they claim was an intentional deception that allowed scalpers to buy up most of the tickets. They have filed a lawsuit against both companies for what they claim was intentional deceptive conduct.
In their complaint, the plaintiffs allege anticompetitive conduct by Ticketmaster and Live Nation, in violation of California's Unfair Competition Law. They seek damages of $2,500 for each violation, contending that these companies' actions have harmed competition in both primary ticket sales markets as well as secondary ticket services like StubHub.
This lawsuit is one of several attempts to hold Ticketmaster accountable, as the Swift scandal has renewed scrutiny of their dominant position in concert marketing and the merger that put them there. It also reignites debates over how best to regulate this industry which has been struggling ever since file-sharing killed off lucrative album sales and left many artists dependent on live performances for income.
Ticketmaster's decision to hold a public on-sale for tickets has left some fans feeling relieved. Kalra, a Swift fan from Kansas City, tweeted her approval: "The public on-sale is an opportunity to relieve some stress for those wanting to purchase tickets at the last minute."
On Tuesday, November 15th, an unprecedented wave of Taylor Swift fans descended upon Ticketmaster to purchase presale tickets for her 52-date Eras Tour. Hundreds of thousands were successful in breaking the record for most tickets sold in one day by an artist.
To be eligible for this sale, you had to have signed up to receive a pre-sale code from Ticketmaster via email or text message. This code allowed you to access a waiting room on their website where you could purchase your ticket for that specific date.
But for many, the process was a nightmare. Throughout the Presale, Ticketmaster's website crashed repeatedly and prevented many fans from logging on.
Recently, Ticketmaster has been struggling to meet the high demand for concert tickets. In fact, its CEO has come under fire from US Democratic lawmakers who are calling for its merger with Live Nation to be reversed. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Richard Burr have written letters to Ticketmaster's CEO expressing their concerns over its role in the ticketing industry.
On Tuesday, Ticketmaster Verified Fan Presale began and it quickly turned into a battleground between its users and servers. The website reported an "alarming number of bot attacks" as well as 3.5 billion system requests - four times more than usual.
Despite all these obstacles, some lucky fans managed to purchase tickets for Swift's Eras Tour during the Presale period. They did so by following tips and tricks posted by Beyonce fans on social media and reading through Ticketmaster instructions in advance.
Jared Moses, 28, from Memphis, found the process to be much smoother than anticipated. He signed on at 10 a.m. local time to take advantage of the presale and purchased tickets for all three cities: Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Santa Clara.
Fans were unable to purchase tickets for Swift's West Coast dates due to Ticketmaster's inability to meet demand. As a result, Ticketmaster delayed both presale for those shows and later the public on-sale of tickets for all of Swift's tour dates.
Ticketmaster is the primary sales channel for concert tickets and a major player in the secondary market. Yet despite its dominance, it has been subject to numerous antitrust investigations and lawsuits; some experts even suggest that these two markets don't operate separately.
Market interactions can make it difficult for consumers to comprehend what they're buying, or even distinguish the primary from secondary. This could result in costly errors or scams, according to analysts and ticket experts.
Scalpers and bots often purchase tickets from sites like Ticketmaster and then resell them on the secondary market. This allows them to collect convenience fees from the second sale while Ticketmaster takes a commission from that ticket sale.
That is why Ticketmaster created Verified Fan, a system that filters out bots and scalpers before tickets go on sale. While it doesn't completely eliminate them, it does a lot to protect fans from such risks.
Another issue with the secondary market is that it provides a platform for scalpers to buy tickets in bulk and resell them at higher prices than if they'd purchased them individually. This encourages ticket brokers to overvalue their products.
Event tickets that sell out quickly, such as Taylor Swift's upcoming tour, present the risk of scalpers purchasing any available tickets. Once in possession, these individuals can resell them at a much higher cost than what was paid or even exceed the face value of the tickets.
The resale industry has grown so large and profitable that Ticketmaster has created its own resale companies, such as GetMeIn!, SeatWave, and Ticket Exchange. To maintain control over this secondary market, they collect their fees twice before reselling the tickets at an increased price.
Resale industry growth has left it more vulnerable to fraud and scams. Sites such as StubHub and Vivid Seats promise verification of tickets and purchase security, yet aren't immune from fraudulent activity. Furthermore, scalpers can create multiple accounts on these platforms which creates confusion for consumers.
