There are some funny jokes and moments, but the movie is a hybrid genre movie, and that kind of hurts it here. It effects everything because it doesn't juggle the genres well. Part comedy, part action, part romance, it all comes together and creates a jumbled mess that does sort of work. It starts out as a violent thriller, moves into comedy, develops the romance and the crime subplot, and ends as an OTT action movie.
The New York Times' Janet Maslin wrote that "the film would have been helped by more directorial spark than is supplied by Peter MacDonald, who is effectively stumped by the screenplay's split personality. Some of the material is played as comedy [...] but a lot of the film hinges on some intrigue involving a corporate swindle, and neither the scheme nor the villains are compelling."
