Elba's first acting role was in Crimewatch murder reconstructions and in 1994 he appeared in a BBC children's drama called The Boot Street Band. In 1995, he landed his first significant role on a series called Bramwell, a medical drama set in 1890s England. He played a central character in an episode of Season 1, an African petty thief named Charlie Carter, who lost his wife to childbirth and had to figure out how to support his newborn daughter. His first named role arrived earlier in 1995, when he was cast as a gigolo on the "Sex" episode of Absolutely Fabulous. Many supporting roles on British television followed, including series such as The Bill and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries. He joined the cast of the soap opera Family AffairsThe award-winning Luther actor, 48, and his wife, 33, married two years ago after meeting in a jazz bar in Vancouver in 2017 and despite their lavish Vogue-covering Moroccan wedding ceremony attended by Vogue editor Edward Enninful, TV star Maya Jama and fashion designer Christian Louboutin; luxury London pad; and clear honeymoon-period chemistry, he says the months since they tied the knot have been some of the most difficult of his life. “Facing my mortality, being diagnosed with Covid and not knowing what it was at the time - going through that was very sobering,” he says, recounting the frightening first weeks of pandemic last Spring.

When you spend a year locked down together, I assume. The pandemic was “feast or famine” for many in the entertainment industry, says Idris, and though he and Sabrina might not have shared the financial concerns of many (he is worth an estimated $20 million), their time in isolation forced them to think creatively. Like many celebrity couples, this meant launching themselves as business partners. Their friends, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex launched their own podcast, Archewell Audio. So too did Robbie Williams and his wife Adya Field, who recorded a series called At Home With The Williamses from their mansion in LA. And what about Bond? Rumours have swirled for years about Idris being the next actor to get the nod. The film star squeezes his wife into a hug when I ask about the latest 007 titbit: that legendary Bond Pierce Brosnan backing him for the role. “Pierce Brosnan was actually Sabrina’s first crush,” he teases, dodging the question as his wife pats him away in faux embarrassment. He laughs and pulls her in tighter: “I’ve got my Bond girl”. Perhaps it’s a different Elba we should have been asking about the rumours all along. (Source: www.standard.co.uk)
