Everything You Ever Knew About Addressing Media Criticism

In an article in The New York Times, writer David Browne discusses how the once-ubiquitous melisma pop style was heavily popularized by singers such as Carey. Browne commented, "beginning [in 1990], melisma overtook pop in a way it hadn't before. Mariah Carey's debut hit from 1990, "Vision of Love", [set] the bar insanely high for notes stretched louder, longer and knottier than most pop fans had ever heard." Browne further added "A subsequent generation of singers, including Ms. Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé, built their careers around melisma. (Men like Brian McKnight and Tyrese also indulged in it, but women tended to dominate the form.)"

By the time she was 18 years old, Mariah Carey had left home and moved to New York City. Like a lot of people her age, she found herself working pretty standard jobs: waiting tables and working coat checks. As Carey told Pitchfork, she also had to endure pretty cramped living conditions; she lived with two roommates on the Upper West Side in an apartment that was so small it required her to climb onto the kitchen counter before she could get into the loft where she slept. The cost? Oh, just $500 a month. (Source: www.thelist.com)

Here are 19 pictures of a young Mariah Carey, dating back to her late teenage years and early to mid-twenties. Mariah Carey is best known for her killer voice and beautiful looks, both of which have been with her since she was young. Born in Long Island, New York, her career officially began in 1990 after the release of her first album “Mariah Carey,” which achieved multi-platinum status. She received four consecutive number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which lead to the release of other albums that were equally successful, including: “Emotions,” “Music Box,” “Merry Christmas” and “Daydream.” She was established as Columbia Record’s best-selling female vocalist. Carey decided to make a change from her usual R&B and pop roots with the release of “Butterfly” in 1997, which featured songs with more of a hip hop vibe. Carey decided to leave Columbia in 2000, and landed a $100 million recording deal with Virgin Records America. Her career began to decline after she suffered a nervous breakdown due to severe exhaustion in the early 2000s, but her most successful single called “We Belong Together” thrust her back into the superstar spotlight.

Mariah Carey is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, noted for her impressive vocal range. Among the many styles she sings, she flits from Motown soul to R&B to Hip Hop and Pop, and she can quickly go from a soulful ballad to a hip-hop song with ease. Her albums have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, she is the third best-selling female artist of all time.
