# Measuring with a ruler

What do you use to measure things? Chances are it’s not a ruler. In this article, I will demonstrate how to use tools like spreadsheets, databases, graphs, and equations to make sense of your data.Learning how to use a ruler is an important step toward understanding basic math and measurement skills. As you teach this important lesson, try breaking it down into small, simple steps to make the concepts easier to learn, understand and retain. Using a hands-on, interactive approach will keep the student entertained and engaged throughout the lesson.

## Ruler

Hold the ruler up and point out the line markings. Indicate that the left end of the ruler is considered to be zero, although in most instances the zero is not printed on the ruler. Explain that it's an invisible zero. Then, explain that the distance from the end of the ruler to the line labeled “1” is one inch, that the distance from the “1” line to the “2” line is also one inch, and that the two together make two inches. Also point out that the ruler is read from left to right, just like a book, and the number should increase as you move your eyes to the right.

Then, draw lines across the rectangle for each one-inch segment. Your original image of the ruler you traced should now be divided into 12 one-inch segments. Make enough copies of this ruler drawing for all of the kids in your class. Hand each child a sheet and ask the kids to cut the ruler drawing along the lines. Once they have the pieces cut out, point out that each segment is one inch, just like on their ruler, and objects can be measured in these increments. Have the kids line up various numbers of segments and count the pieces. For instance, if a child places five segments in a row, point out that the length is five inches. ## Measure

Learn the inch marks. A ruler is made up of 12 inch marks. These are typically the numbered marks on the ruler and are denoted by the longest lines on the ruler. For example, if you need to measure a nail, place one end directly on the left side of the ruler. If it ends directly above the long line next to the large number 5, then the nail is 5 inches long. For example, if you measure a carrot and the tip falls on the line halfway between the 6 1/2 and 7 inch lines, the carrot is 6 and 3/4 inches long.

Make sure you read the ruler from left to right. If you are measuring an object, align it with the left side of the zero mark on the ruler. The left side of the line where the object ends will be its measurement in centimeters. This way the line thickness will not affect the measurement. A ruler is a device with measurement markings on it used for measuring drawing straight lines.
