How to Calculate Square Feet for Tile Backsplash

iling on your wall and been intrigued by the idea of adding it to your sink or tub. But how do you calculate the right tile size? This article will help you make the right decision.

Dad, “how do you figure out square footage?” I am going to confess, prior to installing our removable kitchen backsplash, I was not sure how many tiles I needed and how to calculate square footage was making my brain hurt. Would you believe me if I told you that I had my painters tape out and was mapping it out on the wall and trying to determine how much tile I needed? Oh yes, my dad came home from lunch one afternoon to find me taping off our backsplash in the kitchen. Needless to say, I learned fairly quickly how to calculate square footage.Ha, I too have a college degree and have to google “how do I calculate square feet” every so often. What’s up with the “144” anyway? My dad told me to “look it up” just like the time when I was little and wanted to know how to spell pneumonia. Some of these rules just hurt your brain! Could you please ask gramps what’s up with the “144”? 🙂

If you’re calculating how much area you’ll need to cover with wall tiles, you’ll need to account for any doors and windows. If that is the case, calculate coverage for the entire wall as well as the square footage of all doors and windows (measuring from the top edge of the frame to ensure space). Then subtract the area of all windows and doors from the total coverage of the wall. (Source: www.tileclub.com)

Simple right? However, most areas are not perfect rectangles. For irregular shaped rooms and spaces such as kitchen backsplashes, measure the square footage by breaking it into smaller measurable rectangles. You’ll then calculate the square footage for each section and add them together. Here’s an example of a backsplash where the wall tile goes around a window. (Source: tilestonesource.com)
