In the early 19th century, states like the Netherlands redefined the stone to be in accordance with kilograms. The Netherlands adopted the metric system in 1817. After this time, stones became superseded by kilograms. In the United Kingdom, the stone still plays an important role in expressing body weight in sports. It is used in many sports in Ireland.

In the late Pliocene, it is possible that stone tool use appeared independently in early hominins. The early hominins may have begun to move inland through humid corridors. In coastal areas, they may have used stones as refuges. This is supported by the fact that vultures in Egypt have been reported to use stones to smash eggs.

Although chimpanzees do not seem to detach stones and use them as tools intentionally or systematically, some primate species do use stone tools during foraging. These primates include rhesus macaques and long-tailed macaques. In some cases, the primates use stones to open prey, and in others, they break the stones. This has led to controversy over whether or not hominins used stone tools in the wild. Despite these findings, bonobos are not known to have used stone tools in the wild.
