How many feet in a meter formula

# How many feet in a meter

You may have noticed my use of the spelling 'meter.' A number of people over the years have written to me to say that I am spelling the unit incorrectly by adopting 'meter' as the default spelling in many of my converters and articles. Use of the word 'meter' in the UK is commonly reserved for describing an instrument that measures the flow of electricity, gas, water etc. However, as far as the unit is concerned, there are actually two spellings for the meter - the international spelling of 'metre' and the US spelling of 'meter.' If you're looking for a pain-free method of converting between meters and feet right here and now then you can use our handy converter, below. As an alternative, should you wish to convert between meters, feet AND inches then please try the converter for meters to feet and inches or the one for feet to meters.

## Meter

The metre, or meter (US), is a measure of length. It is the basic unit of length in the metric system and in the International System of Units (SI), used around the world for general and scientific purposes. The symbol for metre is m. Historically, the metre was defined by the French Academy of Sciences as 1/10,000,000 of the distance from the equator to the north pole through Paris. Now, it is defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures as the distance travelled by light in absolute vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. This is approximately the distance from floor to hip bone on the average barefoot man. See all conversions for meters here. Although different systems of measurements have been used by civilizations since the beginning of time, there was no unified system until the meter. The meter originated in the late 1700's during the scientific revolution in Europe. Important scientists of the time decided they needed a standard unit of measurement to compare across studies and disciplines. The French Academy of Sciences decided on 1/10,000,000 of one half of a meridian, the distance between the North Pole and Paris. A stone meter was created and preserved as a reference, although the meter was not fully adopted as an official unit of measurement internationally until the 1875 Metre Convention where the metric system was adopted. Today, only the United States, Burma and Liberia use the imperial system and all other countries use the metric system.

Meters are used often in the scientific community and abroad. The distance of sports fields and events are measured in meters, such as the hundred meter dash. Meters are also used to measure organisms and their environment in ecology, and in architecture to measure buildings and their components. Meters are not a good use of measurement fo very small objects, such as an atom, or very large distances such as the distance between New York and Paris. One meter is equal to 3.2 feet. So, to convert meters to feet, we multiply the number of meters by 3.2. Let's look an example. Say you measured the length of a room to be 6 meters. But, you want to covert this to feet. You can start by setting up a conversion knowing that one meter is equal to 3.2 feet. (Source: study.com)
