The phone area code 774 was part of an early telephone numbering plan and was originally chosen in 1947 to serve San Jose, California. When area codes were introduced nationwide in October 1947, 774 was picked from a pool of seven digit code, and it was not until December 2, 1947 that the original service area was modified to also include Santa Clara county.
