One of the most iconic fast food companies in the world, still standing strong after more than half a century of service. But the origins of the now billion-dollar brand can be traced back to humble roots.

It’s all part of the company’s billion-dollar initiative to enter the breakfast fast food game in earnest. Wendy’s unsuccessfully introduced breakfast menus in 1985 and 2007, but “those menus were too complicated,” Wendy’s CEO Todd Penegor said in a new interview with Yahoo Finance. Those previous efforts also weren’t developed in partnership with the chain’s franchisee’s, Wendy’s president Kurt Kane explained in a recent Investor Day presentation. A medium serving has 330 calories, 46 grams of carbohydrates, 14 grams of fat, and 900 milligrams of sodium. Wendy's describes this savory item as "natural-cut, skin-on potatoes cooked to perfection and seasoned with cracked black pepper and garlic powder." It’ll also offer a number of sides, including an Oatmeal Bar, a Honey Butter Biscuit and Seasoned Potatoes. And customers in the South can start their mornings with a Sausage Gravy & Biscuit, Wendy’s portable take on traditional biscuits and gravy. "In the second quarter, our breakfast sales accelerated as expected, growing 10% over the first quarter," Penegor said. The chain's $1.99 Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit and two for $4 breakfast deal helped drive the growth, he added, saying that "these promotions have been critical to our success as we continue to see very strong customer repeat and high customer satisfaction after people try our breakfast."
