Salt and Straw

There are always two sides to every story. One idea is to mix a bit of salt to the rest of your daily meals to keep your palate from getting too seasoned. The other idea is to take a sip of your favorite drink and then stir another flavor into the drink for a refreshing flavorful combination. Like salt and straw, the two ideas have their pros and cons. Which idea would you choose?

In 2016, Salt & Straw developed new flavors from "food waste"—edible by-products of the food production process. New flavors were made with overripe strawberries, spent brewing grains and near-expiration date vegan mayonnaise. Proceeds from the sales of the featured flavors from its Portland stores ($3,000) were donated to Urban Gleaners, a Portland nonprofit. Salt & Straw creates little food waste or scraps, because its products are frozen. When an item is no longer offered on its menu, any leftover ice cream is donated to a nonprofit. (Source:

Known for its curiously delicious flavors – including custom menu favorites exclusive to LA like Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese and Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough - Salt & Straw also features classics such as Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, James Coffee & Bourbon, and Roasted Strawberry & Toasted White Chocolate. All flavors are handmade in small batches using organic, sustainable and thoughtfully-sourced ingredients such as cream from Scott Brothers Dairy, a family-owned Southern California farm. "This year we made new ice cream flavors that balance each other in ways that only Dwayne Johnson's naughty-and-nice persona can do in this world,” said Tyler Malek, Co-Founder + Head Ice Cream Maker of Salt & Straw. “Under Dwanta's watchful eye, we enlisted hefty splashes of Teremana tequila in a few key spots, kept adding obscene amounts of peanut butter until we got a thumbs up, and slowly went a little nutty. We have three ice creams made by the joyful elves in Dwanta's Work(out) Shop, that truly embody his if I can imagine it, then I can make it philosophy.” (Source: www.forbes.com)
