What Are German Pancakes?

A German pancake, sometimes called a Dutch Baby, a Bismarck, a Dutch puff, or a Hootenanny, is a large American crepe-like popover pancake. You only need six ingredients and you don’t have to stand by the skillet filliping pancakes all morning.

Are German Pancakes Really From Germany?

German Pancakes or Dutch Baby Pancakes are not German Pancakes the way they are prepared in Germany. The American “German Pancakes” are more like a popover, either entirely baked in the oven or started in a pan and finished in the oven.

One of our VERY favorite breakfast recipes are these German Pancakes. They are sometimes named Dutch Babies, German popover pancakes or German Puff Pancakes, But whatever name they go by these German Pancakes are a delicious breakfast your whole family will love. 

Marinated Berries:

In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, vanilla bean and seeds, citrus zests, and water. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Simmer very gently until syrupy, about 25 minutes. Remove from the heat and add the citrus juices. Combine the berries in a bowl. Strain the warm syrup over the berries and marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes. Serve.
