Bananas on a boat

A banana sat on board a boat for an entire year. The boat never moved. It's a fact of inanimate nature.Another big—and perhaps more plausible—theory is that bananas led to a lack of catches for fishermen on boats hauling bananas. Because these boats were moving at high speeds in order to reach their destination before the bananas spoiled, they didn’t offer fishermen enough time to land the catch they were waiting for.

Banana

Many boaters—both those of yesteryear and today’s modern times—would fear unwanted stowaways like venomous spiders, snakes and other critters who could be lurking in their bananas. Those who had heard tales of boaters being bitten by these venomous creatures would naturally be a bit hesitant to bring a bunch of bananas on board, even if the incidents were not widespread.

Some in the fishing charters business extend their distaste for the fruit to include not only banana ingestibles (fresh or dried chips of banana, banana muffins, plus anything banana flavored) but even to items bearing the word “banana” or anything evocative of it, such as Fruit of the Loom underwear, Banana Republic apparel, and Banana Boat sunscreen. (The prohibition against Fruit of the Loom underthings is particularly baffling because that clothier’s logo depicts an apple, leaves, green grapes, currants, and purple grapes, with nary a banana in sight.) Boat

Although the superstition seems to have spread to other types of boats as well, it’s closely tied to fishing boats and the belief that you won’t catch any fish if there are bananas on board. The internet is filled with tales of strict fishing boat captains confiscating bananas (and banana-related items) from passengers and throwing them overboard before setting sail. Many an ill-fated fishing trip, from days when the fish didn’t bite, to near-disasters involving leaking boats, faulty motors, and violent storms, have been blamed on the deceptively innocent Yellow Fruit.

No one wants to share a boat with poisonous spiders, snakes, scorpions, termites, and other pests, but unfortunately, they sometimes came as a packaged deal inside bunches of bananas. The bananas you get at the supermarket are innocent enough, but there was a time when crew members were dying from poisonous bites and termites were chewing away at ships. And if that’s not reason enough to ban bananas, what is? (Source:woodardmarine.com)
