The UEFA Europa League is a club competition where teams from different nations vie to become champions. Held every two years, its format changes each time to promote variety and creativity.

At present, 32 clubs are taking part in this tournament. The winners of each group stage advance to the round of 16 while losers must go through a play-off stage for consideration.

Group Stage

The UEFA Europa League is an European club competition renamed in 2009/10 and structured similarly to the UEFA Cup. It consists of qualifying and play-off rounds before entering a group stage that begins in September. This stage consists of 12 groups of four teams playing each other home and away on a round robin basis; the top two teams in each group, as well as eight third-placed sides from UEFA Champions League group stages, advance to knockout rounds.

This season's 32 clubs participating in the group stage have a chance to make their first ever appearance at the UEFA Europa League final in Budapest next year. While Premier League duo Manchester United and Arsenal remain joint favorites for the trophy, other teams from across Europe will also be striving to claim their spot at Puskas Arena in Budapest.

UEFA seeds clubs for both qualifying and group stages based on their club coefficient rankings at the start of the season. If a team does not rank within the top 10 in its UEFA association, it can either be disqualified from the tournament or replaced by another squad that has won a domestic tournament.

Clubs who qualify for the UEFA Europa League but are not members of a UEFA member association or associated association may enter as representatives of their highest-ranked national association. For instance, Bodo/Glimt, which reached the quarter-finals last season but is not a German Football Federation member, is one such example; they represent one of many associations represented in this year's UEFA Europa League competition.

At the group stage, each team plays each other home and away on a round-robin basis with 3 points awarded for victories, 1 point drawn and no points lost. The top two teams in each group as well as eight third-placed teams from the Champions League progress to the knockout stage where they are paired together and play two legs over six matchdays.

Round of 16

On March 9 and 16, the Round of 16 of the Europa league begins. Teams participating must draw teams from their same association; thus Manchester United cannot draw Arsenal while Real Betis, Sevilla and Union Berlin are all out.

On February 24, UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland will hold the draw for the Round of 16 which includes eight group winners who are seeded and eight knockout round play-off winners who are unseeded.

Tie matches always consist of two legs, with the home team needing to win in order to advance. If a tie remains level after 180 minutes, both teams play extra time until one can be separated. If necessary, penalties will be taken in order to decide the victor.

In the Round of 16, eight groups consisting of four teams are eliminated and their winners paired with one of the other group winners. This is an unusual change from groups where teams could play two away games and only the victor advances to the next round.

Premier League leaders Arsenal take on Sporting Lisbon in the last 16 of their competition. The Gunners sit atop Group A with five wins from six matches and were the only side to beat Barcelona this season; now they aim for another draw against a La Liga side as they attempt to book their place in the quarter-finals.

On the other side of the bracket, David Moyes' West Ham United will face off with AEK Larnaca of Cyprus for a shot at another European trophy under their coach. But they face an uphill battle as they travel to AEK Larnaca - who eliminated Newcastle, Bolton and Everton in this century's round of 16!

One notable qualifier from the round of 16 is Union Berlin, who will make their first appearance in the competition. They defeated PSV 2-0 in the first leg with Luuk de Jong scoring both goals. But Union Berlin will need to be at their best if they want to progress, as they are currently struggling in their domestic league.

Quarter-finals

The Europa League quarter-finals will see some of Europe's greatest clubs square off against each other in what promises to be an exciting competition. As a prelude to next season's UEFA Champions League, teams that win will automatically qualify for that group stage.

In this round, there are some intriguing draws, including RC Celta taking on KRC Genk. The Galicians are currently eighth in Belgium's top flight and are widely expected to make a strong push for European glory.

Manchester United will face Real Betis in a match that promises to be tough for them to win. Coached by former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, Real Betis are unbeaten so far this season and look set for an impressive run.

West Ham United will face off against Ligue 1 side Lyon in what could prove to be a tough test for David Moyes' side. After winning their last-16 encounter against Sevilla, the Hammers are into their first European quarterfinal since 1971 after defeating Sevilla 2-0.

Arsenal will take on Sporting CP in what promises to be an electrifying clash between the Gunners and their Portuguese rivals. So far this season, Arsenal has defeated Sporting 2-1 at London Stadium while Sporting came out victorious on home soil with a 1-0 victory.

This is an ideal chance for both sides to reacquaint themselves with each other and prepare for a potential meeting in the Europa League semi-finals should they progress. Neither side has advanced past the quarter-finals recently, but both have had some remarkable runs this season.

The quarter-finals will be played over two legs, the first starting on 13 April and the second one following one week later. The winners of both matches will advance to the final in Budapest, Hungary on May 31.

Semi-finals

On a day filled with Portuguese victories, Sporting Lisbon earned their place in the semi-finals by defeating Midtjylland 5-1; Ajax were similarly upset by Union Berlin in their quarter-final second leg; Rennes suffered another heartbreaking defeat as they were outclassed by Shak Donetsk in one of Europe's most iconic penalty shootouts.

Although some of the more well-known clubs will be taking part, there are also plenty of lesser known teams that have made waves recently. Despite their modest status, these smaller outfits have had an immense impact on European football - likely leading to even more appearances as the tournament progresses.

On March 17th in Nyon, Switzerland, the draw will take place. It can be streamed live starting at 13:00 CET on the House of European Football website.
