What a girl wants

Whether it’s Christmas, a birthday, or just a special friend, girls often want a non-cuddly, pricey gift. Here are some of the most frequently-desired gifts for girls how to keep in mind next time you head out.Daphne Reynolds is a 17-year-old American girl, living with her wedding singer mother, Libby, above a restaurant in Chinatown, New York City. Libby had met Briton Henry Dashwood in Morocco, and they married in a Bedouin wedding ceremony of uncertain legality. They returned to his family estate in England. His father soon died, making Henry the Lord Dashwood. Alistair Payne, the family's aristocratic advisor, tricks Libby into leaving, telling her it is best for Henry's duties not to know she is pregnant, then he lies to Henry, hiding the pregnancy from him and saying that Libby claimed to be leaving because she was in love with someone else.

Amanda Bynes ("What I Like About You") stars as Daphne Reynolds, a spirited 17-year-old New Yorker who travels to London to find her long-lost father. In contrast to her bohemian mother, Daphne discovers her father, Lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth--Bridget Jones' Diary), to be a very proper politician and English gentleman. Undaunted, Daphne dives into a schedule of stuffy social events, determined to prove that love--and proper etiquette--can conquer all. But as hard as she tries to reunite her parents and make a bid for "Debutante of the Year," Daphne cannot conceal her irrepressible personality or hide What a Girl Wants. Inspired by Vincente Minnelli's 1958 film The Reluctant Debutante.

Parents need to know that What A Girl Wants is light-hearted and fun, but also contains a strong word or two ("bitch," "hell"), and themes surrounding illegitimacy, divorce, and father-daughter relationships. It also contains a fair share of references to high-end goods (Gucci, Prada, Rolls-Royce, etc.) and logos for mundane items like Virgin Atlantic, Tropicana, and Coco Puffs. Drinking is visible over meals and social events. An occasional push and punch occurs, too. There's some inappropriate flirting and references to a man's genitals. (Source:www.commonsensemedia.org)

It may feel to some people like an adorableness overdose, but this movie's intended audience will enjoy it very much. What a Girl Wants is not just a fairy tale -- it is a full-out fantasy straight from the heart of all young girls and former young girls who really really love their daddies. Bynes is a gifted comedienne, but she doesn't get a chance to show off what she does best in this movie. But she has a fresh and engaging presence and some able and charismatic support from classically trained stage actors Firth, Eileen Atkins, and Jonathan Pryce. The love interest, played by Ian Williams, should be high on the Teen Beat hearthrob list.

Seems like nothing is original anymore. WHAT A GIRL WANTS has drawn comparisons to [[ASIN:B000209KMW The Princess Diaries (2-Disc Collectors Set)]], but apparently its roots go back further, to a 1958 comedy film THE RELUCTANT DEBUTANTE starring Rex Harrison and Sandra Dee, which in turn was adapted from a 1956 play of the same name by some cat named William Douglas Home. Cinderella, of course, is the grandmama of inspirations for movies like this. (Source:www.amazon.com)
