Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher's Netflix Movie Review
Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher return to the romantic comedy genre with Your Place or Mine. In this tale, they play long distance best friends who are complete opposites who exchange homes for a week.
This feature directorial debut belongs to Aline Brosh McKenna, author of The Devil Wears Prada. As her feature directorial debut, Aline couldn't have chosen a better cast to bring this story alive.
Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher are Hollywood's rom-com icons, so it should come as no shock that Your Place or Mine, written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada), will capture hearts on February 10. Additionally, Reese co-wrote Crazy Ex-Girlfriend alongside Witherspoon.
Your Place or Mine stars Witherspoon as Debbie, a single mother living in Los Angeles with her young son Jack (Wesley Kimmel). After years of juggling work and parenting duties, she feels like an exhausted shell of herself and needs time away from everything. When Peter (Kutcher) offers to swap homes for a week so they can focus on each other, Debbie readily accepts.
Peter and Debbie exchange homes, their relationships take an unexpected turn even if they remain apart through phone conversations and bubble baths. It becomes evident that the film's central theme is not about how Peter and Debbie can repair their issues with each other through marriage; instead, it explores each individual's growth and self-discovery as they navigate the complexities of their relationship.
It may be a formulaic premise for a film that doesn't need it, but it does feature some familiar comedic beats that help keep the story moving along nicely. As characters swap homes and live together for one week, their friendship rekindles and an intriguing little romance begins to develop.
The movie's greatest strength lies in its ensemble cast, featuring a variety of talented performers who each bring something unique to the table. Tig Notaro excels as Alicia, the mutual friend who looks out for Debbie and Peter when they're in New York. Zoe Chao shines as Minka, one of Peter's former partners who takes Debbie under her wing.
Though some jokes may feel out of place or unearned, this is an enjoyable watch that promises to get viewers feeling warm and fuzzy inside. A welcome addition to Netflix's lineup for Witherspoon and Kutcher fans to spend a few hours, this will definitely keep viewers engaged.
Based on Cheryl Strayed's best-selling memoir, Wild follows the journey of a woman who leaves her toxic home life to embark on an inspiring 1,000 mile hiking trek. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallee from Dallas Buyers Club fame, Wild is an inspiring, unflinchingly honest journey that illustrates redemption through physical activity.
Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon), after divorce, an abortion and heroin addiction, finds solace in hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Her journey helps her process grief, addiction and self-doubt while giving her a fresh start as a new woman.
Director Jean-Marc Vallee, who also directed last year's Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club, gives Wild an intense and powerful view of the wilderness. Reese Witherspoon delivers an empowering performance as Strayed with raw energy and fearlessness.
Strayed's journey in the movie follows her attempts to overcome her traumas and reinvent herself through hiking the Pacific Crest Trail through California's mountains. As she attempts to reconnect with her mother (Laura Dern), who abandoned her when she was young, Strayed begins seeing herself in a different light.
Although based on a true event, the movie makes some changes from Strayed's book. It downplays some characters and leaves out some key events. While still an engrossing and emotional watch, it isn't as in-depth as its book counterpart.
Another thing I love about Wild is how it portrays a strong connection between mothers and daughters. Particularly, Cheryl's relationship with her mother Barbara (Laura Dern) deserves special attention; this kind of mother-daughter connection rarely receives enough screen time onscreen.
In Strayed's mother's case, she has suffered through an abusive marriage and is seeking to heal with her daughter's help. That kind of scenario is rarely depicted on TV screens; yet it serves as a poignant reminder that mothers can be just as resilient in the face of hardship as their daughters are.
Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher star as longtime best friends who switch homes for a week in the upcoming Netflix rom-com Your Place or Mine. Written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna (27 Dresses, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), the film follows Debbie, an accomplished accountant content with her routine in Los Angeles; Peter, a marketing executive yearning for change and excitement of New York City.
Both actors come from the rom-com genre - Witherspoon starred in Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama, while Kutcher made audiences fall for him through Just Married and No Strings Attached. However, they had never previously starred together until now.
In the film, they play best friends who met 20 years ago and shared a bedroom, yet remain close. When they decide to switch homes for a week, they soon discover that what they think they want might not be what's best for each other.
Watch the trailer above to witness what happens when two complete opposites find themselves together, and don't miss out on seeing the full movie when it hits Netflix later this month!
Witherspoon has a knack for strong-willed characters who won't take no for an answer, which she showcases in Election. Tracy Flick - described by Witherspoon as a "pretty nerdy girl with an insatiable drive to win class president" - is determined to succeed no matter what obstacles stand in her way, even social studies teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick). This causes much confusion among other students as she works toward becoming class president despite obstacles like Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick).
She has also shown off her versatility in roles such as June Carter in Walk the Line (2005), for which she won an Academy Award for best actress. Other romantic comedies she has starred in include Four Christmases (2008) and This Means War (2012).
She was also cast in Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice (2014), playing a private investigator (Joaquin Phoenix). Her most recent roles have included portraying an overachieving mother on HBO series Big Little Lies and serving as news reporter on Apple TV+'s The Morning Show.
Based on Michael Lewis' book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, this movie is an entertaining satire of Wall Street's greed and deceit. It follows a group of financial professionals who correctly predicted the collapse of mortgage and real estate markets and made huge profits. Furthermore, the movie exposes corruption within credit agencies and the impact mortgage-backed securities have had on the economy.
Adam McKay directs The Big Short, known for his comedic classics such as Anchorman, Step Brothers and Funny or Die. In addition to directing, McKay also wrote the screenplay for The Big Short.
Christian Bale and Steve Carell star in The Big Short, a humorous yet insightful satire of the 2008 financial crisis. Based on Michael Lewis' book of the same name, The Big Short follows several men as they attempt to profit from a major subprime mortgage bubble that occurred in 2005.
One of the main characters is Michael Burry (Bale), a former physician and manager of Scion Capital. This hedge fund invests in high-risk loans and debt. When Burry begins to suspect that the US housing market may actually be a bubble, he creates new derivative financial instruments which enable him to short the housing market.
Jared Vennett (Gosling) works in the subprime mortgage bond business. After banks disparage his investments, he ventures into business with hedge-fund manager Mark Baum (Carell). Still grieving his brother's death, Mark Baum is an honest but abrasive character with a highly tuned BS detector.
Both actors deliver their roles admirably and accurately, each embodying their respective personas to perfection. Bale's confused and quirky performance is perfectly balanced by Carell's occasional fits of rage, making the men in The Big Short seem plausible as they plan to take down Wall Street.
This film provides a compelling account of the housing crisis and how it led to the 2007-2008 economic downturn. Not only does it depict how many people lost their homes and jobs, but it also provides an inside look into the workings of large investment banks.
Celebrity book clubs are becoming increasingly popular, and Reese Witherspoon's is no exception. Established in 2017 through her media company Hello Sunshine, Reese picks a new book every month.
Her selections often combine nonfiction with fiction, always providing thoughtful and stimulating discussions. Recently, she has expanded her book club into YA territory.
As a young woman wakes up in the hospital with no memory of her life, she discovers a collection of love letters written to her by an unknown man - not her husband. Moyes weaves together the lives of two women separated by 40 years and their struggles to stay together in this epic romance.
In 1960, Jennifer Stirling awakens in a hospital with no memory of her life. She finds a letter written to her by her lover - an attractive but troubled foreign correspondent - but circumstances and social convention conspire to keep them apart.
Forty years later, Ellie Haworth comes across the same letter in a newspaper archive while researching an anniversary article. She becomes fixated on it, hoping that it will help her resurrect her struggling career. If these lovers had such a happy ending, perhaps her own could too?
As Ellie attempts to unravel the mystery of Jennifer's life, she uncovers many other enigmatic letters, each offering a clue as to their identity and history. Soon enough, Ellie realizes her obsession is beginning to affect her present and even put in jeopardy her job.
This book can be a bit disjointed and jumps around a lot, but Moyes' writing is excellent and she makes it easy for readers to become invested in the characters and their story. Additionally, this is an uplifting and inspirational tale about love, loyalty and hope.
This year, The Last Letter from Your Lover was one of my favorite books and an absolute must-read for romance enthusiasts. It has many twists and turns, a shocking reveal, but ultimately leaves you feeling full of hope.
Nothing beats a good romantic novel to transport you away from reality and into an alternate realm filled with beautiful people in love. Jojo Moyes excels at crafting stories between different characters that never feel predictable.
The Last Letter from Your Lover is a classic Moyes romance. The main characters are all flawed and complex, and Moyes writes about them with great empathy. It's an inspiring tale about two people seeking happiness in an uncertain world - making it perfect for any book club and romance novel lovers everywhere!
Agatha Christie's husband announced he wanted a divorce so he could marry his mistress, so she left home in the early hours of December 3rd, 1926. She went missing for eleven days until being discovered under the name of her husband's lover at a spa hotel in Harrogate, England. This disappearance became one of history's most famous cases; newspapers across Britain covered its search efforts.
Nina de Gramont, a UNCW creative writing professor, has taken the mystery surrounding Agatha Christie's disappearance and created an intriguing novel that is both well researched and captivating. Her book offers a fictional interpretation of what happened before Agatha Christie vanished from her house and family.
Nan O'Dea, the mistress of Agatha Christie's husband Colonel Archie, provides the narration. When O'Dea began her affair with Archie when she was young, her background in the First World War served to shape her duplicitous nature.
The author does an incredible job of framing Nan's affair as the catalyst for Agatha's disappearance, making for an captivating read. We are drawn into her story as she shares everything about herself and Archie before Agatha vanished from their lives.
Unfortunately, the plot can become disjointed and difficult to follow along with. Nonetheless, this is an engaging story with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of John Grisham's beloved novel about a rookie lawyer taking on an insurance company is one of his most acclaimed works. Noted for his meticulous attention to detail and willingness to explore themes both contemporary and timeless, Coppola has earned critical acclaim for The Rainmaker, one of his most critically-acclaimed films.
John Grisham's classic movie has become a classic that many moviegoers cherish. Carefully chosen film sets were used to replicate real-life settings, giving the action an authentic feel - especially in courtrooms, airforce bases and houses used during production.
The Rainmaker is a legal thriller, but it's also a story about character. Matt Damon perfectly portrays Rudy Baylor, an aspiring attorney striving for justice both for himself and those around him.
The Rainmaker follows Donny Ray Black (Johnny Whitworth), a leukemia patient, as his medical coverage is denied. As Rudy attempts to assist Donny Ray, his case becomes increasingly complicated as insurance company lawyers become increasingly assertive and the situation escalates.
This conflict drives the movie's plot forward and leads to a dramatic confrontation between Rudy and an insurance defense team. Grisham uses this circumstance as an opportunity to demonstrate how corruptive the insurance industry can be, turning good people into bad.
As the film progresses, it becomes evident that Rudy is more than a good lawyer; he's an admirable human being. This is evident in his relationships with Kelly (Claire Danes) and Deck Shifflet (Danny DeVito), as well as in his unwavering commitment to doing what's right.
Ultimately, Rudy's personal growth is what ultimately brings about the film's resolution. We learn a great deal about human motivations and how people can overcome challenges to achieve success.
John Grisham's story The Rainmaker is a must-watch for any fan of his books. This entertaining and captivating film will have you laughing, crying, and cheering for the characters as they fight to gain justice in their cases.
