Lorenzo Tondo reports on the latest developments from Ukraine, which has been in a state of crisis since Russia invaded it last month. He provides insight into how the country is dealing with the aftermath and other consequences of Russian intervention.
On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy led tributes to renowned commander "Da Vinci," who was tragically lost this week during clashes near Bakhmut, Ukraine.
On Thursday, Russia launched 81 missiles at Ukraine in the largest single attack since the conflict began a year ago, in retaliation for an attack last week that Moscow described as a cross-border raid by Ukrainian saboteurs. This unusual assault, which involved multiple weapons that mostly missed air defenses, raised fresh questions about Russia's war strategy.
This attack marked the debut of a new mix of high-tech weapons that Moscow is trying to sell as part of its arsenal modernization project. Included in that arsenal are six hypersonic Kinzhal cruise missiles which Moscow has said it cannot intercept. These missiles can hit targets up to 400 miles (640 kilometers) away and carry a heavy payload, making them difficult for Ukraine's air defense systems to shoot down.
Regional administration chiefs reported a large number of buildings destroyed or damaged across several Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa in the capital; Mykolaiv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zhytomyr in eastern Ukraine; Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv in western Ukraine.
At night in the capital, air raid sirens wailed as police cordoned off roads leading to damaged facilities. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that energy infrastructure in the city had also been targeted.
Power outages were commonplace in the city on Thursday, with almost half of households without heat as temperatures dropped near freezing. According to DTEK, three of its power stations had been affected and another was on fire.
These attacks, which lasted around seven hours, were the longest of Russia's conflict in Ukraine to date. At least six people were killed and many more were left without power as a result of these outages.
They also caused an unexpected power outage at Zaporizhzhia's largest nuclear plant, leading to cooling systems being shut down and creating the potential risk of meltdown.
Though the airstrikes are unlikely to have any lasting effect on Kiev's military capabilities, they are "playing on the nerves" of civilians in Ukraine, according to a military analyst. Furthermore, Europe's biggest nuclear plant could experience meltdown, prompting an emergency response from Washington.
The Russian government has promised to defend its interests, and the military is equipped for war with a stronger adversary. But the conflict has largely remained at a standstill on the battlefield over winter, with both sides relying on tank units to hold off each other's ground forces.
Its military is also dependent on the international community to send more fighter jets to strengthen its defenses, but so far none of the bigger powers - including Britain and the United States - have agreed to do so.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, they have been using air-launched missiles to strike at power grids and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. On Thursday however, Russia appears to have added a new weapon to their arsenal: hypersonic Kinzhals (in Russian: "Daggers") which could prove difficult for Ukrainian defenses to intercept or shoot down.
The Kinzhal missile, launched from Russian MiG-31K fighter jets, was little-known outside Russia until Russia began using it during their conflict in Ukraine. Its hypersonic speed, high maneuverability and altitude make it impossible to detect or intercept; capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 10 - that's 12 times faster than a bullet - it has been described as a "game changer" in this battle between Moscow and Kiev.
On Thursday, Russia launched an attack that included eight Iranian-made Shahed drones with "stealth" technology, targeting the Russian-built Zhivkuyu radio tower in eastern Ukraine that controls power grids there.
Russia's armed forces announced in a statement that it had struck military and industrial targets in Ukraine with its artillery, including "Kinzhal hypersonic missile system" capable of flying at Mach 10. These missiles were directed at key components of Ukraine's military infrastructure, military-industrial complex enterprises, as well as energy facilities supporting them.
Russian Ministry of Defense reports the attack as a response to "terrorist actions" organized by Kyiv in Bryansk region last week. They further described it as an "exhaustive retaliatory strike."
Putin told reporters in Moscow that the strike was in response to "terrorist actions" in the Bryansk region, and Russia called it a "tactical pause" before moving forward with its next offensive in Donbas. This attack had echoes of Russia's earlier attempts to intimidate Ukrainians with attacks that targeted civilian centers and knocked out their electricity grid.
As the war continues, Russia has advanced across much of eastern Ukraine. There, their forces have taken control of several towns and villages, leading many civilians underground in shelters built to protect them from enemy attack.
Velyka Novosilka, for instance, has only 150 residents left. CBS News recently visited this village where most of the residents are elderly and have been uprooted from their homes.
Oleksander Sinkov, a resident of Velyka Novosilka, believes the influx of people has caused social unrest in his village. He estimates that about half the residents have been displaced and are now living in shelters where they lack basic amenities like cooking or taking baths. Without access to food or sanitation services, they struggle to survive each day.
The battle for eastern Ukraine continues, but it appears Russian mercenary group Wagner has taken a "tactical pause" in Bakhmut. According to US think tank the Institute for the Study of War, Wagner is waiting until enough reinforcements of conventional Russian troops arrive before re-engaging in what has been one of the most fierce battles so far in this conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Yevgeny Prigozhin founded the mercenary group that has been at the forefront of Russian military actions in Ukraine since their invasion began. They are accused of committing war crimes such as raping and robberying civilians and torturing prisoners who deserted from their forces.
A complex relationship has existed for decades between Prigozhin, a Kremlin loyalist, and the top brass of the Russian Defense Ministry. While he has often criticized them, he also takes credit for tactical victories like Popasna or Soledar.
Last week, Prigozhin announced the opening of Wagner recruitment centers in 42 cities to replenish his private army's ranks. He stated that he needed tens of thousands more soldiers to meet the demands of his relentless Ukrainian offensive.
Recently, Prigozhin has been vocal about his frustration with the Russian government's failure to supply his fighters with ammunition. He has publicly called for more weapons and reinforcements, and in a recent message on Telegram said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had cut off all communication after receiving multiple requests for ammunition.
Experts contend that the mercenary group has a "complicated" relationship with Russia's military. While Prigozhin has sought supplies for his soldiers, Moscow has so far refused to supply them with weapons necessary for victory in Ukraine's ongoing conflict.
This development is significant as it indicates the Russian government has lost control of a key military operation in their longest conflict since the Cold War. Therefore, getting hold of some resources for success in Ukraine has never been more critical for Moscow.
ISW, a US think tank, notes that while the Wagner group has made incremental territorial gains, it remains uncertain whether they will retain their operational superiority in future Russian advances. They add that an increase in conventional Russian troops to the area may suggest Moscow plans to counter any potential culmination of Wagner's offensive operations in Bakhmut with additional conventional resources.
