The sequel to the blockbuster animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was a huge disappointment. Critics have said the movie was "nervous and jumpy" and that it was "uninspiring".While no one was exactly crying out for second helpings of this animated meat-eorology franchise, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 is charming enough on its own not to feel like just reheated leftovers. Inventor Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), the man whose foodstuff-generating contraption led to the comestible weather patterns in 2009’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and his gang of pals discover that his invention is still at large. What’s more, it has started imbuing its creations with sentience, leading to an entire edible ecosystem.

The fantasy elements in this film rise to a new high with a Jurassic Park-like theme on the island. Even the musical score sounds surprisingly similar to the dinosaur movie. Thankfully the script contains a healthy helping of jokes for the parents and plenty of imaginative creatures for young viewers. Some brief moments of peril (involving a hungry cheese throwing hamburger spider and the threat of falling into a giant food grinder) along with moments of bullying and an apparent death are the movie’s biggest concerns for parents of little children. Otherwise this creative diversion, with its crazy food creatures and an earnest young scientist, cooks up a tantalizing tale about the power of friendship, family relationships and scientific integrity.
And that makes it a pretty appetizing entertainment option for family audiences.After a quick recap of the original movie the story picks up about ten minutes after the end of the previous installment. Flint stopped the food machine at the end of the first film and saved the world from the food storm, his idol Chester V shows up to offer free clean up of the island, and Flint a job at the Live Corp Company while relocating the rest of the Swallow Falls residents for their safety. When an unknown difficulty stops Chester's plans for the island, he convinces Flint to return and destroy the FLDSMDFR.
