Rather than focus on assigning blame these days, James Kratch, UVA's new athletic director, has been taking a more old-school approach to problems. He's doing away with meetings during the season, relying largely on feedback from players and coaches, and working individually with coaches to evaluate talent performance through a personal connection. Is this a welcome change?

SEASON

The second phase of work, including new weight training and meeting rooms as well as a new Virginia Baseball “Hall of Fame” soon followed. Visiting team and official locker rooms were included. This important facilities upgrade helped to lure a dynamic young coach, Brian O’Connor, to the University, who was named the 2009 National Coach of the Year as he led his team to its first-ever berth in the College World Series in Omaha and a consensus number one ranking in national polls for much of the 2011 season. Led by a solid core of returners from last year’s College World Series run, the UVA baseball team is back at it. Among the returners this fall are outfielders Alex Tappen and Chris Newell, infielders Max Cotier and Jake Gelof, sluggers Kyle Teel and Devin Ortiz, and pitchers Matt Wyatt and Nate Savino. The Hoos already beat the Ontario Blue Jays 14-1 in a scrimmage, per to CBS19. Newcomer Casey Saucke, a shortstop from Rochester, NY, started and homered against Ontario. They’ll now play their annual Orange-Blue World Series, a long-running tradition in most college baseball fall seasons, as well as a few other scrimmages. For the 2021 Virginia Cavaliers’ baseball team, the dream isn’t over yet as the plucky Hoos found a way to win yet again. In true Virginia fashion, it was dramatic, tense, and exhilarating with first year Kyle Teel hitting a monster grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead.
