The first thing that usually gets the entertainment on a vacation is the tv shows. But why don't you consider the movies? When price is a priority, Stay on Main Hotel and Hostel delivers. Decor in the public spaces is attractive, particularly for the price. The 138-room high-rise offers a variety of accommodations from a single bed in a six-person dorm room to a private room either with either an en-suite or shared bathroom; most have colorful accents and quirky touches. Thrifty travelers looking for a downtown location with easy access to popular tourist destinations should be satisfied. The hotel does not have air-conditioning, though there are fans in every room. If that’s a deal-breaker, consider The Stillwater, which has 232 air-conditioned rooms and is a ten minute walk to the Nokia Theatre, Staples Center and LA Convention Center.
In 2013, the Cecil (by then re-branded as the "Stay on Main" although still maintaining the original Hotel Cecil signs and painted advertisements on its exterior) became the focus of renewed attention when surveillance footage of a young Canadian student, Elisa Lam, behaving erratically in the hotel's elevator, went viral. The video depicts Lam repeatedly pressing the elevator's buttons, walking in and out of the elevator and possibly attempting to hide from someone. It was recorded shortly before her disappearance; subsequently, her naked body was discovered in a water supply cistern on the hotel roof, following complaints from residents of odd-tasting water and low pressure. How she got into the cistern remains a mystery. However, this claim appears to be nothing more than the retelling of a long forgotten falsehood that first appeared in a 1995 column written by Los Angeles Times scribe Steve Harvey. Without verifying the claim, Harvey had quoted Ken Schessler, author of the book, This is Hollywood, as saying: “On Jan. 11, 1947, just three days before she was murdered, the Black Dahlia was seen in the bar in the Cecil Hotel with a girlfriend and two sailors.” Schessler then added, “In fact, the hotel and the bars in the same block, including the Dugout next door, were some of Elizabeth Short’s favorite hangouts during the week before she was killed.”
This city hotel and hostel offers comfortable rooms with a private bathroom as well as budget rooms with a shared bathroom in the hall. Its amenities include a business centre and a concierge service. Start the day with a continental breakfast. If need be, feel free to use the communal kitchen and the coin-operated washing machine. With its central location in Downtown, the Stay On Main Hotel is a highly recommended starting point from which to explore Los Angeles. About 30 minutes on foot will take you to the Staples Centre, and Chinatown is within easy reach by bus. The beach in Santa Monica is about 25 minutes away by car. (Source: www.hrs.com)
The Cecil hotel is locally known as LA’s Murder hotel; a place where people went to commit suicide mid-20th century, serial killers lived ($14 a night for Richard Ramirez, people!), and now the unsettling, unresolved, exorcism-like story of Elisa Lam who was last seen behaving disturbingly peculiar on the elevator, Feb 2013.The night Reserve Club is 500 metres from this venue, while Fashion Mart is 500 metres away. It is located a 20-minute walk from city centre. Meatzilla diner is 5 minutes’ walk away. LA Live Entertainment Complex is set within a few minutes' drive from Stay On Main.
There are plenty of freebies here, including breakfast and a snack.
