Richard Belzer
Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the son of Frances and Charles Belzer, a tobacco and candy retailer. (Source: en.wikipedia.org )
It may surprise you to know, but as NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" has finally begun airing its 23rd run of episodes on the network, it's already earned the title of longest-running live-action primetime drama in television history (per Deadline). At 502-episodes and counting, the run of "SVU" might be even more impressive than "The Simpsons," when you consider that it's also a spin-off series that has continued the legacy of a beloved show — the original "Law & Order" — that was on the air for 20 seasons itself. In most cases, the comic’s move is from stand-ups to sit-coms. Not so for “The Belz,” as he is known. Richard went from being one of stand-up comedy’s best to having one of the longest-running dramatic characters in TV history: Detective John Munch. (Source: www.juf.org)
Having started his career as a stand-up comedian, Richard Belzer first made a name for himself as "Saturday Night Live"s first-ever warm-up act before shows (via AARP).
