We are lucky enough to be kaitiaki of 16 acres which we have been designing according to permaculture principles. At Kahikatea Farm we are growing our soils, growing a food forest, growing our children and their future. We are growing and sharing our knowledge, and growing our community. In our certified organic nursery we grow over 350 species of perennial vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, pollinator and pest control plants, shrubs and trees – everything you need for your permaculture system in a one-stop shop – including NZ’s largest range of medicinal herbs. Whether you have an apartment balcony, an urban garden, a lifestyle block or a large farm we can supply top quality, site-specific plants plus advice on how and where to plant. We also run gardening, permaculture and food forest workshops and courses.Native, or indigenous, plants are those plants that naturally evolved in a particular location. For example, most cacti are native to the deserts of North and South America. Exotic plants, by contrast, are plants that were introduced to a new location because people thought they would be pretty or useful. While native plants naturally thrive in their own ecosystems, exotic plants may need a great deal more water than occurs naturally. In some cases, the irrigation of exotic plants can be a significant drain on the water supply. Also, some exotic plants can overwhelm native species, degrading the environment and removing significant resources for pollinators and birds. Kudzu is an excellent example of an exotic plant that has destroyed many native ecosystems.

Upstarts Organic Seedlings is a wholesale nursery that grows and distributes a wide selection of organic vegetable and herb seedlings to the Monterey and San Francisco Bay Area. Heirloom or hybrid varieties of seed are carefully selected for flavor and quality. Seed selection is also based upon plant vigor, disease resistance, and regional growing conditions. We use untreated seed with our custom soil blend to grow our seedlings. Our seedlings are grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We have been certified organic with California Certified Organic Farmers (C.C.O.F.) since 1991.Hybrid vs. heirloom — do you know the difference? We carefully select non-treated seed for our vegetable and herb starts. The varieties we offer are either heirloom or hybrid varieties carefully selected for flavor and quality. Vigor and disease resistance, as well as regional growing conditions play a part in our seed selection. We are committed to not purchasing or selling genetically engineered seeds or plants.
