However, based on DNA studies, botanists restructured the group in 2012, placing numerous monkey flower species in other genera and leaving just seven species in the Mimulus genus, found in North America, Australia, Madagascar, Africa, and a handful of South Asian countries. This reorganization is still a matter of debate among some botanists.
