Melvin Booker, a 36 year-old man from Dallas, is a master of a special kind of magic that combines sleight of hand, mentalism, and misdirection. His mindblower style of magic is at times hard-hitting and at others sly and provoking. He has been featured on MTV’s That Gurl Que$ix, and has shared the stage with Peter principle, one of the infamous Penn and Teller.

OLD

and in seven subsequent Summer League games, he averaged 15.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. He went on to make his NBA debut two days before his 19th birthday, in the Suns' season opener against the Dallas Mavericks. He became the first player in NBA history to debut at 18 years old after playing at least one year of college basketball. In 21 minutes of action against the Mavericks, he scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting in a 111–95 loss. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)

On July 14, Booker broke Rick Barry’s 54 year old record of most points in first NBA playoff appearance with 601. Despite the success, the Suns would lose to the Bucks in six games. Booker in his first career playoffs averaged 27.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, with 45/32/91% shooting, and back-to-back 40-point games in the Finals becoming the third player in NBA history to have back-to-back 40 point games in the Finals. Devin Booker, just 18 years old, is projected to be an NBA lottery pick this summer, despite not starting a single game for the Wildcats this season. Just think about that for a moment. Booker could become the face of an NBA franchise, and his pro debut will mark the first time he's started a game since high school. (Source: bleacherreport.com "Devin worked so hard," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "It's been tough. He's 18 years old—he's probably one of the youngest freshmen in the country. He got on a run, and all of a sudden he's making shots, and if you remember the comment, it's like, 'I'm shooting it in the ocean.' And then his ocean got really small. (Source:bleacherreport.com))

“He didn’t go for the flashy game. He went for the simple game. He understood the importance of what Chauncey would bring to a team. I knew then, for a kid to be 11 or 12 years old and understand that, I was like, this kid understands basketball.” (Source: thesportsrush.com)

While Booker watched the games with as much excitement as you could imagine an 11 or 12 year old to have, he really never concentrated on the flashy three pointers or dunks that stood as “eye-candy” to everyone else. (Source: thesportsrush.com)

PLAYING

While playing for the Grand Rapids Mackers in the 1995–1996 CBA season, Booker met Veronica Gutiérrez. The two became close and had a son, Devin Booker, born on October 30, 1996. The two never married and Gutiérrez would take care of their son Devin while his father played pro basketball in Europe and Asia. During the summers, Booker would bring his son to his games which helped gain Devin's interest in basketball. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)

After playing for the freshman, junior varsity and varsity basketball teams during his freshman year at Grandville High School in Michigan, Booker moved to Mississippi to live with his father after the latter's retirement from professional basketball. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)

Devin became a star playing for his father at Moss Point and was named a McDonald’s All-American as a senior. He then spent one season with the Kentucky Wildcats (only because he had to play one year somewhere), winning SEC Sixth Man of the Year honors, and was then taken with the 13th overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. So just think about all of that the next time you’re watching Devin Booker light it up. If Melvin Booker gets drafted into the NBA, he wouldn’t have ended up playing for the Grand Rapids Mackers (at least not at that time), never meets Veronica Gutierrez, and Devin is never born.
