COMEDY

In the letter, NAMI executive president Lauire Flynn argued that "Me, Myself & Irene perpetuates a myth that schizophrenia-a severe, biologically-based brain disorder-is a split personality", and criticized how Fox was "seeking to dismiss such concerns with claims that the film is 'only a comedy,'", stating that "for millions of Americans, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses are no laughing matter". This film is not only the funniest film of the year (so far), but one of the best of the year (so far). Jim Carrey's comedy antics (not seen this good in 3 years) makes a come back thanks to the Farrelly brothers (Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary) who make their 2nd collaboration. Here, Carrey plays a gentle police officer who gets screwed in life so many times, he grows a new personality that is incredibly bad. (Source: www.imdb.com)

If you are looking for a light comedy with some minor romance, nominal action and offbeat slapstick, this 1990s flick is great. Renee Zellweger is looking her best in this film and Carey is at his peak in comedy. Younger audiences may not get it or think it is crude enough; whereas, church-mice, geriatrics and sensitive types will find some of the material quite crude indeed. Not for the kiddies either, just so you know. I recorded 75% of this movie off cable when it came out in the 1990s and always wondered about certain things, like how he was unmarried and had three black children. Sounds like a setup for racist jokes, but it is not, as you will find out. His kids are smarter than anyone else in the film. I'm really glad this classic has become available again on streaming. Brings back some good memories. Five stars to offset the plague of trolls who slam decent movies for their own entertainment. It is really a four-star film. (Source: www.amazon.com)

BOBBY

The movie is by the Farrelly brothers, Peter and Bobby, whose "There's Something About Mary" still causes me to smile whenever I think about it, and whose "Kingpin" is a buried treasure. They worked with Carrey in "Dumb and Dumber," which has some very big laughs in it, but this time their formula of scatology, sexuality, political incorrectness and cheerful obscenity seems written by the numbers. The movie is as offensive as most of their work, which would be fine if it redeemed itself with humor. It doesn't. There is, for example, an extended passage making fun of an albino that is not funny at all, ever, in any part, but painfully drones on and on until the filmmakers cop out and make him the pal of the heroes.
