Cur Dog

The mostly white, sometimes light-coated, short-haired, and shorthaired mountain dog is an intelligent, energetic, and highly active breed. These dogs are popular as family companions and excel at various activities including hunting, tracking, and serving as police or military dogs. The dogs are not aggressive and are very easily trained to the point of doing tricks for treats. Their short, smooth coat does not shed and their short hair does not require rigorous grooming.

The Mountain Cur dog breed originated in the mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee. They were a major part of the early settlers’ lives and helped their humans while they developed farms in mountainous, rural, southern regions. They acted as watchdogs on farms, assisted with hunting, and even herded livestock. Dogs of this breed still perform those same tasks today among other jobs, including being loyal companions. Mountain Curs are protective of their family and they are constantly wanting to please their family. Due to their protective nature and their fierce loyalty to their family, though, the Mountain Cur can be reserved with strangers. However, once they warm up to a stranger they are just as friendly with them as they are with their family.
