There is no simple answer. The number of weeks in a year may be as much as 52 depending on the year and calendar used. For example, a Julian year calendar uses 365 days, but an extra day is added in a leap year. There are also other calendars which include the tropical year and a sidereal year. It's 2019, and the question of how many weeks are in a year continues to baffle people. And, of course, we'll be here to help you find the answer. But first, let's go over what a 'week' is.Every year, we’re taught how many weeks in a year. But how many weeks are there in a year?
A federal holiday in the United States is a day that is recognized by the federal U.S. Government as a holiday. These are designated by the United States Congress in Title V of the United States Code (5 U.S.C. § 6103). This year's federal holidays fall on January 1st, January 18, February 15, May 31st, July 4th, September 6, October 11, November 11, November 25, and December 25. A week has 7 days because the Gregorian calendar follows the phases of the moon. Although the Moon takes 29.5 days to cycle through its phases, this is a hard number to base a time span on. It was the Babylons that rounded this cycle down to 28 days and divided into period units of 4, with 7 days each. This is why there are 4 weeks in a month.
This is all based upon the Gregorian calendar (introduced back in 1582), which cycles every 400 years. If you want to go a step further and work out the average number of weeks in a year across the full Gregorian calendar, you'll find that a year works out at 365.2425 days. When divided by 7 it gives you a total of 52.1775 weeks. In 1752, Europe was using the more accurate Gregorian calendar, which we still use today, but Britain was dragging its heels with the Julian calendar. The big switch happened in September that year, but to catch up with everyone else and to correct the accrued inaccuracy of the Julian calendar, English folk went to bed on Wednesday 2nd September 1752, and woke up on Thursday 14th September 1752. Some sources claim that members of the public rioted, outraged that their lives had been 'shortened' by 11 days!
