It's a common cliché that you can't judge a book by its cover. However, for this last step, people often rely on the cover to ensure that they're buying the right book for them. But is there really only one step in a mile? Better yet, is there really only one step in a mile?According to the Mayo Clinic, the average American gets in 3,000 to 4,000 steps each day (that's probably lower than ideal, for the record). Whether you're into tracking your daily steps or not, knowing how many steps you take each day and how far you've traveled can be great indicators of your overall health. The concept of step tracking can be a great way to have a baseline understanding about how active you are overall—from walks, to runs, to other types of workouts, the number your pedometer spits out is a reflection of everything you do.

While 10,000 is the general ‘gold standard,’ you will not get far if you’re only able to walk them once a week. The best number of steps for you is the one you can make daily and turn into a regular habit. Slowly increase the goal. Sooner than later, those 10,000 will sound like a joke.
