Freaknik is a huge Rhythm and Blues festival and parade in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s been going on since 1979, bringing a little bit of the south to the north.Looking for a good time? While the weekend is normally a time for rest, all bets are off during the annual Freaknik celebration, running for the six days of Thanksgiving weekend in the Atlanta area. This year, the celebration, which is billed as the “Sabrina Roxxx presents Freaknik, Atlanta’s annual love letter to the world of dance,” (followthefreak.com) will last from Nov. 24-30.Freaknik Atlanta is a yearly tech and culture festival in Atlanta, Georgia. Last November, the festival raised over $100,000. In its first year, they moved to a different location and increased their attendance by over 1,000 people from last year.Freaknik Atlanta is a celebration of everything strange, bizarre, and different. The event was created by two Atlanta locals to celebrate the creativity, collaboration and courage needed to bring different cultures and ideas, together. After a 20-year hiatus, the last official Freaknik being in 1999, Atlanta-based promotion company After 9 Partners and Carlos Neal contracted Luther Campbell, Juvenile, Trina and others to spearheaded the return of a revamped Freaknik in June 2019. The Summer 2019 Freaknik featured hip-hop and R&B music artists performing at the Cellairis Amphitheatre. Other activities were available throughout Atlanta, such as a community service event. Many of the 20,000+ attendees were adults who participated in the official Freakniks of the 80s and 90s.

Originally launched in 1983, Historically Black College and University students traveled in large numbers to partake in Freaknik. At its peak, it attracted a quarter of a million attendees. Also, it wasn’t abnormal to see vulgar acts taking place in the streets of Atlanta in broad daylight. In 1999, due to violations and complaints, the last official Freaknik was held in Atlanta.
