Peter Chernin's The Chernin Group purchased a majority stake of Barstool on January 7, 2016 and it was announced that the headquarters would move to New York City. In 2020, Penn National Gaming purchased a 36% stake in Barstool Sports from the founders for $163 million, including $135 million in cash and $28 million in Penn non-voting convertible preferred stock. Following the sale, The Chernin Group maintains a 36% stake in the company, while Portnoy continues to run the site and retains creative control over content.

Women Say Sex With Dave Portnoy Was Violent and Humiliating

A new Insider report by Julia Black alleges that Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, had “violent and humiliating” sex with women as young as 19. The internet personality, whose public behavior is essentially synonymous with Barstool’s brand of frat-bro misogyny, has been accused in the past of cultivating an environment where sexual harassment and cyberbullying are encouraged, but this is the first time someone has come forward publicly with allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

Despite Portnoy’s denials, the Penn National stock was hammered today. A poor Q3 earning report announced today, combined with the Portnoy story, saw the stock fall to a yearly low, then rebound slightly. It still amounted to a 20 percent loss on the day for Penn.
